THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP Lakeshore scene...?

Just an old scene from 2002 that I found again, and thought I'd bring it a bit more up to date with newer techniques... Any critiques would be quite welcome! I plan on using ridiculous volumetrics to render the clouds, but it's taking on an illustrative, nearly cartoony feel to it. Let me know what you think? Changes?

A previous cloud render... The illustrative kiddy-story look is kind of (almost) intentional!

First one for sure, it does have an illustrative quality about it. Nice shore transition. Well done, let us know when it's finished.

Those liquid clouds are freaking me out. I'm not quite sure how to say this, so forgive me if it sounds confusing. I find the lighting or sun direction to be interfering with the detail of the image. At least I think that's what's happening. I'll tell you what I don't like. I can't see any detail because the trees and the boat people are too dark, whereby the sky is very bright. I may be wrong, but it looks as though the sun is lighting the scene 90 from the right, and its bugging me. Also the water is too ripply as compared to the water on this side of the boat. Ah heck, just ignore me. I don't know what I'm talking about.

Maybe it's because my Geometry is a bit rusty, but are we talking 90 degrees in relation to the horizontal plain? If so, wouldn't 90 degrees place the sun directly overhead? If the sun were to the right, wouldn't the angle have to be between 0 and 90 degrees?
Maybe not, like I said, my Geometry is rusty, lol. LSD: My main problem with your image has to do with the texture of the lake. Near the shore the water seems to be very turbulant, but around the boat it looks to be placid. Maybe something in between that makes the water more uniform? I really like the scene a lot, looks like a nice place to spend some quiet time. :^)

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

I like it, but when the clouds are somewhat cartoon-like, shouldn't the lake be too?

Good points, all of you! Here's a newer render...

And the link to the "final version"... Added the oars and did some sky-work and colorwork in Photoshop. Tell me what you think?

I like almost all of it but the red trees feel forced to me. Slightly too linear and scaled odd...almost like bushes with legs. They "feel" like they should be narrower if they're going to be that short. Like the changes you made to the final though...nice piece overall but a little light for you don't you think? I'm used to your stuff being all dark and foreboding. :)
