A few weks ago or so, we were involved in discussion about PC's and requirements and whatnot, and AgentSmith mentioned that HE ran an Athlon 2000 just like mine, but that his was a full 500MHz faster than mine! So I looked on my motherboard and sure enough, my FSB was set to 100MHz, instead of 133... So now I'm sitting pretty at 1667MHz, instead of 1250! Thank you, Ser Smith, and a big bow to you for pointing this out to me! Just goes to show, even massively arrogant, egotistical bastards like me can't know it ALL!

LOL, yeah I actually knocked mine back for about 3 months at one point and didn't notice. One day booting up I happened to glance at the screen...aaaaaaaahhh, whoah, it makes a big Dif. I've got an AMD 1.7, which is actually 1.43(or 1.48). Presently on my way to a meltdown and a HD re-format. Ugh, never fun. Have fun ICM

Since my machines are up 24/7 I run them all little bit below optimum speed, for longer CPU life (gets less warmer, important for AMD's, what I heard, lol), hope U have plenty of fan power in your box, so it won't die on ya during that next big render :P

;oD Glad to hear that LSD!! It's looking like not knowing about that stupid mobo jumper has hit up a few of us, lol. Can't have enough fans. I have the cpu fan, tower fan in the back, 2 fans came inside my power supply, video card fan, and ever since I lost a hard drive to heat...all 3 of my hard drives are now slung inside ittle sleds, each with two fans. Jeez, that's 11 fans total, lol. AS

I found a fan solution. One day working on a job, this was being tossed out. It's in a heavy cast frame, variable speed which is set to 1/3 it's speed. It keeps my core temp at rock bottom. I just keep my case side open, and clean static particles once a week. Damn thing will move the curtains across the room. LOL.

Rofl...Hey, even with all my little fans, I still keep the side cover off my PC. The sound isn't that bad, and I just won't take the chance anymore, especially with summer coming here. AS

water cooling... is the way to go, put together a water cooled system for a neighbour and it rocks, I'm still running o'ced P2s and a p4 lappy :(

Ah the joys of living in a cold damp climate. Computer stays healthy and underheated but even in May I'm wearing fingerless mittens at my keyboard :D

(grins) Aye, my only beef with water cooling is that it's actually LOUDER than air cooling. Koolance cases have 2 to 4 fans atop the box for cooling the liquid, and they roar! Just have my CPU fan, Geforce fan, and a side fan running this one. My old 8-GB slave drive has been running for 6 years now, and I've never had a full system meltdown on my root 20GB. Yet. Yet... Still, CPU core says 43 degrees, which is well below the Ahtlon 2000's threshold. I had an Athlon 2400 for awhile, but it would boot up at 70 degrees, and smoke out by 75, no matter how much air we blew at it... If not speedy, this current 2000 system is the most stable I've ever used. So I'm stoked on an extra 1/3rd processing power! Imagine being able to flip a switch in your car and go 33% faster? Now THAT would be a mess!

Cooling your computer in oil might be a solution, like this guy from Germany did. (BTW: Core temp running usually somewhere around 47-49 degrees, with Seti@home running in the background it is about 5 degrees higher, so alien life out there or not, they are not going to burn my machine :)

I always wondered, why not buy a cheap mini fridge from walmart (or insert your cheap retailer here) and put your computer in that and crank the temp dial down to the coolest setting. For most refridgerators that's around 3 or 4 C. Wouldn't that keep the computer cooler than all that messy oil? Then you could overclock that puppy to your heart's desire, and it aught to stay as cool-as-a-cucumber.

@LSD, The one I put together for my neighbour has two 150mm low rev fans gives an on load core temp of 30C (when churning SETI or rendering), audably it's almost silent. @Bandolin, the problem with a fridge is that of condensation and moisture control, you're very likely to zap your chip or mobo, that why vapochill systems and so on are so difficult to set up.

Aye, Gog, sounds like fun! I live literally right next to Infotech, where they build and develop the Koolance cases you see in magazine and stuff. If you can make a silent one, though, more power to you! Perhaps a hybrid? Using a water-cooling system with refrigeration and NO in/on-case fans? Anyway I'm very very happy to be seeing a full 33% speed increase on both rendering and regular use... I'm powering through Rhino now at unforeseen speeds, and exporting a model I couldn't do a few days ago with much more ease. But that's another story entirely! Thanks again AS, for prodding at me about this. I know you thought I was full of crap for thinking my machine was supposed to run at 1250, and you were right!

I saw a page where a guy made a cone coming out of his p3 chip and filled it with nitrogen. I believe he overclocked it to 5Ghz :)
