Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 22 9:27 pm)
P6 is fully compatible with all the P4 and P5 content. You may have geometry issues (backfacing polygons and ballooning prop geometry if you try to use smoothing on it), but they can be worked around. I believe there =is= a workaround for this; it has something to do with the security checkbit that the Athlon 64 implemented, that was enabled with SP-2. But not having XP (still with trusty ol Win2k), I can't say what it was. One of the XP techies about will have to take it from here...
Both P5 and P6 work fine on my Athlon64 WinXP Pro SP2. I left the Data Execution Prevention at the default (operating system files only). That may be the problem.
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
Hmm. What system do you have? Mine is an Opteron, and I've yet to have a problem of any sort, with Poser 5 or anything else I can think of. And I've done no tweaks to XP whatsoever. Oh, wait a sec. I did eventually turn off the firewall, but not because I was having any noticable trouble with it. I was already using a firewall, and I liked it, so I've just stayed with that one. (I actually had both firewalls running at the same time for a while, and still didn't see much trouble -- though I did a little.) Anyway, make doubly sure you have ALL the Poser 5 service releases installed, and then, if you keep having trouble, regarding the 'known problem', I suggest you still not be too quick to take CL's word for things. Experiment a little. If you can get hold of a different but compatible video adapter, for example, you might try swapping them out. In my experience, an awful lot of Poser troubles seem related to what video adapter you're using. And there are other possibilities, too. You might have something conflicting in the memory. See if you can get hold of EndItAll or some similar program and straight up after a clean cold boot, try removing anything and everything you can from memory -- maintaining only what's necessary to keep the system stable -- and then try launching Poser and see what happens. If the problem goes away, then you can experiment to find out which application is causing the problem, or if you don't need that stuff running when your using Poser anyway, you can always just cold boot and clear out the memory like this every time you're ready for a Poser session. Well, that's my advice anyway. Hope something suggested here helps. And there's probably lots of other stuff you could try, too. / R

This is actually a 2-pat question for anyone who knows. I recently discovered the hard way that Poser 5 won't work if you have a 64-bit system (I recently bought a new system and one has Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Here's my 2-part question: 1) Does anyone know of any current fixes to this problem outside of buying Poser 6? 2) If I do buy Poser 6, will the downloads for Poser 5 still work with it?
