Subject: Just another con or the real deal?

dialyn ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 10:50 AM · edited Wed, 22 January 2025 at 7:32 PM

This morning I had two coupons/gift card promotions in my email box. One was supposedly from Dairy Queen/Baskin Robbins. The other was supposedly for Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts. (Obviously they have guessed correctly what my eating habits are.) I deleted both because I don't click on anything that is emailed to me these days, and the properties on each email looked extremely dubious. I was just wondering what experience other people were having with this. Maybe I'm overly suspicious in my old age but it just didn't feel legitamate to me.

They promise you a coupon for free products, then you have to click through a series of pages making choices to view advertising and input your name, address and phone number.

Once you're done will all their pop-up pages they take you to a page and ask you to purchase two or more offers to get your coupon.

I've never gone past that point and bought anything so I can't tell you if it's a scam or not.

Be careful though, one of the things they offer can be charged right through your phone number.

The ones I checked were big name companies like Walmart etc.

We just had a story on our local news about a teenager who opened up a pop up and his parents found themselves with a mysterious $500 phone bill that was traced back to the pop up. Wouldn't you think people so slimy could go into honest work...like politics? Kidding, just kidding. I got a couple of restaurant coupons that I clicked on because they were restaurants I knew but I quit when I saw it was an endless pop up thing that would leave me in one of the rings of Hades if I continued.

Breast enlargment for a dude? I get the other offer of enlargement and I'm a gal...lol. but as to email ads, don't click any links, type the actual addy or do a search for the correct addy if you want to check it out. That includes ads for 3d progs or Poser stuff. I even type Renderosity's addy rather than follow an email link. Too risky.

Thanks Luminaaa that is extremely useful. I had a similar experience. Only this one was "buy any of these two offers and get $1000 gas for a year". You choose two, and then it gives you the same list and you must choose three. You pick, and then it's four. I assume it just goes on and on until you've signed up for all of them. I wouldn't know, I stopped =) I did get that really great deal from Blockbuster though, with the delivered rentals and an introductory price of $10. It just goes straight to $15 (USD by the way) after the first month. Hopefully it will pay for itself.

I've been getting those free dunkin donut things..I live in the UK and, as far as I know, we don't have them here. My favourite was the one that promised me a body like Cindy Crawford..my wife wasn't too keen on that idea though.

I get offers from everything from free hamburgers to computers and refrigerators. In every case you have to sign up for and fulfill 2 or more offers that they have on the site, from BMG music service to a credit card to whatever. God only knows how much you'd have to spend on those offers to qualify for a free laptop or a refrigerator.

Talent is God's gift to you. Using it is your gift to God.

I hardly even bother to read email anymore...in fact my finger is so click happy that I find myself wading through a thousand 'forgotten to delete' emails just trying to find 'that one that was important' ;) now I am off to delete my deleted emails while thinking of it lol ;)
