Subject: Trouble with a morph target spawned from a single magnet in P5

Jalad ( ) posted Tue, 17 May 2005 at 6:25 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 2:27 AM

I set up a simple magnet to morph a small area of Vicky2's abdomen. I defined the small area using the size of the magnet zone, and the magnet's effect was restricted to the appropriate small area. When I spawned a morph target (and deleted the magnet) and set the new morph setting to 1.0, it did work as far as recreating the localized morph, BUT for some reason there was also a slight (but very noticeable and annoying) effect over the whole abdomen, whereas the magnet had not caused any effect beyond the localized morph area. Why is the effect of the morph target not identical to the effect of the magnet? Why is the morph target altering the whole abdomen, and how can I stop that? Many thanks!

Are you sure the lighting may not have created the illusion that the morph was 'good' in the first place? I've created morphs before that at first glance looked fine, but when I moved the figure or changed the lighting I could see defects clearly. Easy mistake to make.

Another easy mistake to make: Vicki2 loads with the Soften Hip morph set at 1. When you save the morph, the influence of Soften Hip is saved with it. So when you apply your morph, the Soften Hip part is applied at double strength. Fix: set the Soften Hip dial to zero before saving your morph.

You can even fix this "faulty" morph: load Vicki2, apply your morph, and set the Soften Hip morph dial at -1. Then spawn your morph target again.

Tunesy: Thanks, but yes, I'm sure it is not an illusion. With a straight-on view of the abdomen, I can dial the magnet settings up and down to confirm that the magnet is affecting only the localized area in the middle of the abdomen and having no effect on the overall width of Vicky's abdomen. Then, still without touching the camera or lights, I spawn the morph and delete the magnet, and now when I set the morph to 1.0, in addition to my intended effect, Vicky suddenly gets love handles all the way out to her flanks, way beyond the small area of the central abdomen that the magnet had been affecting. It's weird, but definitely not an illusion.

Jalad: that is EXACTLY what happens when the Soften Hip dial is applied at double strength. When you spawn a morph target, not only the magnet effects are taken into account, ALL morphs that are set are taken into account. Including the Soften Hip FBM. So your morph contains the magnet effect plus the Soften Hip effect on the abdomen. To remove the Soften Hip effect, try the procedure in post #4.

AHA!! That was the problem, and your suggestion fixed it instantly. THANKS! I don't know how long I would have screwed around without figuring that out. You've saved me much time and aggravation.

I've written a little Python script that zeros all morph dials of the currently selected figure, including FBMs. Interested? I could put it in freestuff.

PLEASE DO! Sounds very handy. Thanks. (confession: don't know how to use a python script, but probably should learn that too)

Attached Link: http://svdlinden.xs4all.nl/poserstuff/downloads/zeromorphs.zip

Here it is, just unzip to a folder of your choice (I recommend Poser 5RuntimePythonposerScriptsDownloads)

You can run the script using File->Run Python script, and then browse to the script.

If you want to be able to run the script more conveniently, you can edit the script "Poser 5RuntimePythonposerScriptsUtilityutilityButtons.py", just change the line

#poser.DefineScriptButton(7, ":Runtime:Python:PoserScripts:Utility:listFiles.py", "List Files used")

to

poser.DefineScriptButton(7, ":Runtime:Python:PoserScripts:Downloads:ZeroMorphs.py", "Zero Morphs")

Don't forget to make a backup first!

After this, you can always run the script by using Window->Python scripts. Click the "Utility" button and you'll see the "Zero Morphs" script.

This edited script assumes you've placed the downloaded script in the folder mentioned above Good luck,

Steven.

Excellent, thanks for the freebie and the explanation. Certainly useful to keep me from making similar mistakes again. Cheers!
