Yo MoonGoat and matrixmode - didn't realize you were practically neighbors! I went to Agoura High. Weird how small the world is at times, eh? ;) Rayraz - I'll second Kathy's request to see your map when your done.

Rayraz, have you checked for virus and worms? I'm still in the process of doing so. My norton antivirus crashes waaaaaay too often, so now I'm using AVG Antivirus (which has saved my butt before when Norton "overlooked" about 7 or so trojans and 3 trojan downloaders) I'm currently still in the process of scanning, it takes about 6 or 7 hours to scan everything and every 20 minues or so my system freezes, so I gotta scan it in bitesize bits. So far I finally managed to scan my entire C: drive (which is my system drive), no virusses found.

Rayraz, what I suggest to you a few things. 1st - Go into program files and look through all your programs and see what doesn't belong there. If you know your computer, you should know what you installed and what installed itselft off the net. If there are things that don't belong (i.e. spyware and adware) get rid of them first as best you can. Sometimes you are going to have to manually shut stuff down in the task manager yourself and delete registry keys manually (I suggest you back up your registry first if you are going to do this) Also, how many processes do you have running in the background (could be an indicator of spy/adware which has been a huge culpret of computer problems for the past 10 months) 2nd - Run your system tools. Run scan disk and defrag, in that order. Then run your anti-virus after you do that. Also, what OS are you using and what is your drive capacity and how much free space do you have? If you are running low on disk space, that can cause problems. Hope this helps some.

1st: I've tried Adaware and Spybot S&D. I'll try SpySweeper next. Then if Spysweeper don't fix it I guess I'll have to resort to a manual sweep yea. Luckily I've done the Manual thing plenty of times before on my last system before this one, so I should be okay with that. I don't have a huge number of processes running, only 39. Only ones I don't recognize are SymWSC.exe AdskScSrv.exe and WDFMGR.exe What is strange though is that my pc uses 349mb's of ram for only my virus scanners, outlook, Gmail notifier, SpywareGuard, some ATI thingy, Zonealarm and 4 IExplorer windows (I know I should use Mozilla but I seriously dislike working with all them damn tabs lol) 2nd: I ran scandisk but my computer freezes before it's done. I don't dare defrag as long as it keeps freezing, I don't want it to freeze right in the middle of moving some files around on the harddrive. Free diskspace is nearly 5 gb on my C disk, about 53GB on D, 15GB on E, 3GB on G, 7GB on H and 33GB on I (F is my CD/DVD+/-R/DoubleLayerDVD-burner)

wdfmgr is a part of Windows Media Player 10 series, adskscsrv is apparently Autodesk licence thingy, symwsc is a Symantec process. Are you running scandisk etc in safe mode? This might help it run to conclusion without locking up.

Safe mode works even worse then normal mode lol. Half the time it won't even start in safe mode, the other half of the time it takes AGES and it keeps checking the CD/DVD drive for whatever reason (even if there's no disc in it) What's Autodesk? I can't recall having anything installed called Autodesk? Freezing seems to occur more often during use of programs that demand a lot of processing power, aka, when I'm rendering something (rendering on my pc has become about impossible this way) or when I'm working on big files in photoshop (like when I'm working on my poster, which can get VERY irritating.. especially if you have to reboot everytime you clone one simple little object.)

Rayraz... go to the link above and get some help from them in figuring out this mystery with your computer. I bet they can get things straightened out for you. Autodesk.... Autodesk Autocad would be my guess. There are 10 kinds of people: Those who know binary, and those who don't.
A whiner is about as useful as a one-legged man at an arse kicking contest.
Mahray is right on the money with what wdfmgr and symwsc are. adskscsrv is the licensing for 3DMAX/Autodesk. If you have outlook zone alarm and everthing else running in the background when you are rendering, that's going to eat up resources right off the bat. Another problem that I see, is your disk space. Once you start getting low on disk space, your system WILL get screwy on you. Your C, G and H are low. Try to unass some of the stuff you have on those drives. If it's garbage, lose it and if it isn't, try to burn some stuff onto disk to save it and get it off the machine. If you can't run scandisk, pass on that for now and run the defrag. I'll bet that is one of your main problems. After you run it, try scan disk again. If the drive is really fragged, that may be one of your big problems. All those spyware and adware removal programs you have are only a temporary fix. I tired them all, also, and they never seemed to get everything. There was always still something there. What operating system are running, btw?

yeah..because your 'virtual' memory uses the hard drive when it runs out of actual memory..;) that puts a real hurtin' on performance. Btw..look for another program out there called Hijack This! (just as it's spelled..love the name..;) will find some screwy stuff..also look for a site called 'computer cops' (I think), that has 12-step programs for getting rid of things (finally got 'rid' of Cool Web search..;)
I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

hmm 5Gbyte is low? My swapfile is on my D disc and never gets larger then 2Gb. The 3DMAX thing makes sense, I got 3dsmax on here. My prob with defrag is that I fear what might happen if my pc freezes right in the middle of defragging. Couldn't that be dangerous to the integrety of my files? I don't have CWS on my pc, so that's not it either, got HijackThis and nothing on there also :) I've struggled with very nasty spyware before on my last system, I had to remove the spyware and trojans manually 'cause them automatic spyware proggies couldn't get rid of it.

Right at that spot approximately 30,000ft below you as seen on google.
It's hard to get more exact than that. I should be ok as long as I don't p.o. anybody. ;)

OK, Rayraz, if things get to the point where you really fear doing something, then it's time for 2 things to happen. #1 - Back up, i.e. copy/burn, anything you have on your main drive that you don't want to lose. Whether you burn it to disk or swap it over to another drive, it doesn't matter. #2 - Do a fresh install of yor OS now, because the situation is not going to get any better. Spyware/adware has been a huge problem all over for sometime now and all the programs you have to detect/remove that trash from your system are taking up space all on there own. I fresh install of the OS and proper monitoring of your system will prevent this in the future. This would be your best option. There is a adware/spyware scanner from MS in beta version out. My network at work has it and it seems to work pretty good. Of course, there are also the plethora of others out there you can get.
