Subject: Need to model a Nautilus Shell

DigitalDream#3 ( ) posted Sat, 03 February 2001 at 2:06 PM · edited Tue, 23 July 2024 at 12:35 AM

I need to model a Nautilus shell like the one in the Peter Sharpe Bryce tutorial, but I would like to do it in Carrara. would this be possible? Thanks in advance.

Sure - I think the Spline Modeler would be a good choice. There are Spiral presets that can at least get the shell started. Is the shell a spiral type object? Im thinking it is. Clint Hawkin-Z GraF-X Carrara and RDS Shader Packs Poser figures, 3D Models, Music Loops and Free Downloads!!

Yes, it is a spiral object. In Bryce, I can just take a toroid and use multi-replicate to achieve the model I need. Just can't export in other than Bryce's .obp file format.I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the spiral in the spline object modeler to work the way I want it too.

You should be able to make it with Helixir. I don't know what file types it uses. It's a free program available at http://www.evolve.co.uk/helixir/

http://www.shelly.de/ has a great shareware for this purpose. Helixir exports to raw which can be converted to other formats.

Caligula's Puss Reboots has exportable primitives that you could use to substitute for your Bryce primitives - it's a pain in the neck - you have to manually substitute her torus for each one of the shell's toruses using copy/paste matrix - but it's one way to get stuff out of Bryce and into other programs like Carrara. Let me know if you need the link to her site - they might even be in the Bryce Free stuff section here at Renderosity. Jade

It is very doable in the spline room but will take a little work. Here is a qoute from Mark above that should help "using the spline modeler with the 'Pipline' extrusion preset allows you to adjust the 3D axis rotation of all cross sections independently using the extrusion path bezier controls". I didn't have much time to perfect the shell or texture for that matter but hopeful you will get the idea. Stace

Cool! I would rotate the shader though. If you look at the nautilus shell that love2all made with Helixir, you'll notice the lines flow with the shell, not across it. Or, your own picture earlier showed it only being stripped on a small section of the shell. A texture stretched along the whole model should do the trick. Good work! Keep at it! :>

Digitaldream, Well this is more a Bryce thing than a Carrara thing, but since it uses Carrara in the first step ... If you also want to try exporting it in Bryce do this: Export a mesh version from Carrara of the primative you want to use in Bryce. Import the mesh version into Bryce. Use your mesh rather than Byrce's primative to create what you want . you should then be able to export your completed (and grouped) object from Bryce by using the e option in the selection menu and then press ctrl + D. This works with B5 and I think B4 but not B3d. - TJ

BTW the C2 shell looks great.
