Hmmm ... silo doesn't let you assign names to the groups? Another thing you can do is take the OBJ file into a text editor (WordPad works), and do a global search and replace. Start backwards, though, because if you rename object1 to lForeArm, then object10 through object19 will get named lForeArm0 through lForeArm9. 8-)
You could use the free version of UV Mapper. That allows you to rename and combine object and material groups, or to turn material groups into objects, and vice versa. Can't you alter the object names in Silo? I can alter them in Cinema4D and Wings. (You could also use Wings, or any of the other free modelling programs out there. But check and make sure if Silo can't do this in the program)

Just use UV Mapper (link to download area). The free version is very functional. You can assign groups, materials, and "regions" (normally just used in UV Mapper to help organize your stuff). Plus, you'll want a decent program to help lay out your UV Map if you plan on texturing.

Is there such a thing? I'd like to import a model into poser and give it bones, but all of the group names are pretty weird. I don't see a way to do that in poser. Is there a free tool out there that will help me with this? Thanks.
