I'm putting up a small freebie package to create eye glints/highlights, which I talked about in the linked thread. I'm currently just a P4 user, and this package uses bump maps, so I've included the .bum files used in the MAT poses along with the .jpg the .bum is based on. But I'm realizing I need to do separate MATs for the people using versions higher than 4. For the MATs for later versions, can I simply replace the reference to my .bum file with the reference to my .jpg file? Or do I have to have a completely different entry using a node or something? Any help would be appreciated, thanks Unzipped PS. Also do you get some kind of notification if your package has been accepted by Renderosity for the free stuff?

Hi Unzipped, No, you don't get a notification on freestuff entry. Files are usually approved within 24 hours. If there is a problem with the package or URL we will contact you. Karen Poser Mod

IIRC, i think if you just change the .bum reference to .jpg in the p4 matpose, it comes in attached to the gradient bump node in p5---not what you want. i make my p5 matposes in MatPoseEdit, telling it to save in p5 format. it seems to fix the bump problem ok. looks like a good freebie!

" i make my p5 matposes in MatPoseEdit, telling it to save in p5 format." I used MatPoseEdit myself for this, I'll give that a looksee. Post version 4 users out there willing to give my package a run through to make sure it's working? Unzipped

There is no problem with *.bum files in P5 if your MAT pose references this bums. The problem is with *.jpg files used as bump maps, Poser 4 and Poser 5 handles in a different way these jpegs. Poser4 treats the jpeg the same way as bum and Poser PP/5/6 converts internaly the jpegs to bum, so a Poser4 jpeg bump becomes a bump of a bump with Poser PP/5/6. If you don't care about file size, using only bum files will work correctly with all version of Poser.

Stupidity also evolves!

Actually, AFAIK (i'm a P4 user) .bum files are only handled by P5 by setting a special option, which disables most other materials options at the same time (essentially it resort to using the standard P4 rendering engine). BTW - usually only the .jpg file is included, even in P4 files, to keep the file small, leaving to the end user to convert it to a .bum, which isn't that long nor hard to do.

I do all my sets in P4, make the mats up with BUM files, but don't put any Bump mapping at all in the CR2 itself (but your not going to have CR2s, I gather) I then put that version of the MAT in a P4 pose folder, make a copy of the P4 folder called PP folder (for ProPack and later versions), then do a simple search and replace for .bum to .jpg in the PP folder for each MAT. P4 will seem to use JPG bump maps, incidently, or rather it will not generate an error message, but the result is all weird.

"usually only the .jpg file is included, even in P4 files, to keep the file small, leaving to the end user to convert it to a .bum, which isn't that long nor hard to do." I'm aware of this. Frankly as a Poser 4 user I find this annoying since if you forget to create the .bum before you apply a MAT that uses it it will often cause the program to be unresponsive. Since the files in question are so small, I'm including the .bum as a convenience. This: "then do a simple search and replace for .bum to .jpg in the PP folder for each MAT." Does not seem to jive with this: "i think if you just change the .bum reference to .jpg in the p4 matpose, it comes in attached to the gradient bump node in p5---not what you want." I'm inclined to think Jim Burton is correct, but does anyone else want to weigh in on this one? Thanks again everyone for the help. Unzipped
