Subject: Mirror new bones?

I modeled a new figure, and it has the following groups. hip abdomin chest head l_hip l_thigh l_knee l_shin l_foot l_shoulder l_upperarm l_elbow l_forearm l_hand r_elbow r_knee r_thigh r_hip r_shoulder r_upperarm r_shin r_forearm r_hand r_foot I have created the following bones: hip abdomin chest head l_hip l_thigh l_knee l_shin l_foot l_shoulder l_upperarm l_elbow l_forearm l_hand I have read somewhere that it's possible to mirror bones, and I'd like to do that to make the r* bones match the l* ones. How do I do this? BTW, I haven't used the group tool to associate the polygons with the bones yet. Thanks!

Well ya gotta make 'em and name 'em. So following your naming scheme there you have to go r_shoulder, r_upperarm, etc.. once you have then all named and coming off the right parents all you have to do is click figure>symmitry>mirror left to right and it will move all the new bones in to the opposite positions as the left ones. On a completly side note, with you naming like that traditional poser poses will not work on this figure as the bone names are not conventional. the poser conventional naming is lCollar, lShldr, lForearm, lhand...

I'll give that a shot. Thanks. I know my names are different. I think he has fewer body parts than the traditional poser figure though, and once I make a few poses of him and export the objs I don't plan to do much if anything with him in poser. Thanks.

Ok, here's something interesting. I used the program mkobj to name the groups. When I look at the figure face on in mkobj. the l_shin object is on my right (as it should be since it's his left shin, and we're facing each other). However, when I pull the figure into poser, and look at him in the pose room the l_shin object is on my left. I drew the l_bones on my right (which should have been his left). What's up with that?

The problem might be in the underscore you use in the names. What happens if you replace all underscored names with similar names without underscores? And make sure those names are the internal names, not the screen names. By default, Poser assigns names like bone1, bone2 to both internal and external names, the symmetry tool only looks at the internal names. Hope this helps, Steven.

yeah never thought of that with the internal nice call svdl. Poser uses the internal names for symmitry and not the 'names' on the screen, those are there for us...not sure why there are two different names though, but it may be fun to make up funny external names LOL.

I've been changing the name of both the internal and external names. I think I have have issues with what's really left and what's really right. Poser and Silo seem to agree on the definition of left and right (orientation of the x-axis I suppose), but when I pull it into mkobj it seems reversed. Thanks again, and if you have any more ideas please let me know.
