This talk about memory and stuff, together with a thread over at DAZ prompted me to try and load a BIG model. I tried to find really big models on the web, and I couldn't. Stanford bunny and its company need to be converted, the big XFrog tree I had turned out to have "just" 768 thou polys... So I did a model of mine, the one above. It's not finished (yet!) and I let Rhino mesh it whichever way it wants. It gave me 1 million 315 thousand polys (1315000) with several errors, but I simply exported it as 3DS without joining any of the parts. So every rivet, screw and frame is a separate mesh. 3DS file is about 33 MB. It imported in less than five minutes, but smoothing took almost an hour. Rendering time: less than a minute. :-) BTW, Bryce file is 133 (a hundred thirty three) MB. Default sky, default grey ground plane, default grey texture.

Interesting model. My biggest model (made in Bryce though :P) was over a million polygons I think. It was made up mostly of cubes, with a few spheres (which is probably where all the polys come from). I tried a scene with two of them, Bryce laughed at me but didn't lock up. Took about twenty minutes to duplicate the second one though, and FOREVER to render.

I've never counted polygons, but the biggest thing I ever made was 13 meg (LEXX..;)

Somebody said there is like polygon limit for one single mesh, but I imported Stanford's dragon (1,132,830 triangles) with no problem, took Bryce5 20 minutes to load it in ! :D Nice modeling, Erlik ! ;o)

You know, Erlik... You COULD have just made a sphere and then made random spikes all over it and smoothed it a million times (Wings terminology I know nothing about Rhino) until you reached the polygon count you wanted. All the polys, none of the hassle. =) It is a good model though. Guess you killed two birds with one stone. =)

Oh, I've had the most of the model since last summer and I'm now adding finishing touches to it. So it just came handy. :-) If I created a ball with ... 50 random spikes, let's say, cut the ball with the spikes and blended the spikes into the ball, and used a very low angle to mesh the NURBS, the polygon count would be measured in several millions. :-) Kemal, do you have the link to the dragon? Not only the one with the holes in ther scales, but the other one, too?

Erlik, I made mistake in my previous post (polycount wise), dragon originally had that many polys, but the one I imported was from the link above (somewhat reduced version of it, problem was that I did not have ply converter of any kind so I used openInventor format version to convert it to DXF).

Polycount I had was actualy 871,414, I realized I made mistake when I checked my gallery today :P

The utility I used is called IVCON.exe and I still have it on my HDD, it looks like maker of that DOS program has no website anymore, so, no download available at this time :(

I have no idea where other dragons are, anyone else ??? :D
