THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: I'm gonna GIGERize you!

pidjy ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 11:09 AM ยท edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 3:21 AM

Hey Guys.. ( and ladies ;-) Here is my first atempt to a HR Giger like wall. I don't know yet what will be the result in Bryce... Let see it in a few hours! I surely must improve that work to try to get close to Master HR G. but it's a start... I'm not sure about the texture color, I will try to make the same but with soft blue tint. The specular Map is gonna be very important ( still gotta work on it ) to get a good result. Here is the map

The Bryce image will follow in a few hours..

shinyary2 ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 11:18 AM

Yeah, maybe a bit more organic-looking? I haven't seen much of Giger's stuff (aside from what I see in Alien of course! =P), but from the movie organic Aliens-type stuff. You could even go and download an Alien model lol. Yeah... Looks great though BTW. =)

pidjy ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 11:27 AM

This one is "based" on the "Biomechanicals" painting period of HR Giger, that's why it's not very "organic" , I still need to add some details, but I want to test it in Bryce before getting too far because I'm really not sure to get the good result... ;-p

Nice, can't wait to see what it turns out like.

most of his stuff seems to be 'cool' colors (blues, greens, etc)..I did a Gigeresque once, but mine was actually modeled (boy did that take awhile..;) looks far closer than anything else I've seen..you could sell 'em to Poserites as backgrounds..;)

Holy crap! That looks awesome. Short of the dripping goo, I'm checkin' the corners with my flamer. The sarge took away my armour piercing ammo...

Looks good to me. I assume it isn't what you expected because it doesn't look like Giger's? Still looks great and yes if you exported it you could probably sell it to the Poser people as an .obj; lol you seriously should try it. I can see it know. I think this looks great. it says Giger to me anyway. I can never get such crisp lines using maps on terrains how do you managed that?

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 4:15 PM

I think the crisp lines are a combination of high terrain resolution and a texturemap that works together well with the shapes.

What do you mean with "crisp lines" ? The terrain resolution and the texture map are 1024 x 1024 (Massive resolution in the terrain editor )

I don't know how capable Corel Photopaint is with making this kind of terrain maps, however being a former photopaint user, I would suggest trying out photoshop. Once you've adjusted to the interface you'll absolutely love it and you might grow to rarely ever touch photopaint again.

just trying to find the tools that are right in front of me in Photopaint. Something that takes me ten minutes in Photopaint takes me half a day in Photoshop.

pidjy ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 5:50 PM

UVDan, to paint those kind of elevation map and texture you need a tool that offer some effects such as "inner glow" and "outer glow" (with the choice of the glow color of course)... I will post a little tut tomorow.

pidjy ( ) posted Mon, 30 May 2005 at 5:51 PM

Dan to get that result I can use up to 40 layers.. but it depend on the amout of "details"..

I will wait patiently for the tut.

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 12:05 PM

Rayraz--yeah... that would be why I said that... =) I heard he based it on some sort of underwater creature that looks almost exactly like the Alien. But that's just a rumor and probably not true... =) pidjy, want tut!!! =)

pidjy ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 12:13 PM

no it's true shinyary, and this creature is a drangonfly larva... yes I'm working on the tut!!!

Attached Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/trivia

"In "The Blue Planet" (2001) (mini), David Attenborough said the 'Alien' monster was modeled after the Phronima, a creature spotted by submersibles at great depths. It's only an inch long, mostly transparent, and it looks like a shrimp with head, eyes, jaws and teeth just like the H.R. Giger monster." If you are interested in the movie "Alien" and don't know about IMDB.com and/or it's trivia pages, check out the link above. This is cut-and-paste from the IMDB trivia page for "Alien". I notice that it never actually comes out and says that the monster was based on Phronima, but hopefully David Attenborough did his research before making a statement like that. =) "The original design for the Alien by H.R. Giger had eyes, which were eliminated to make the creature look even more menacing." This is another interesting tidbit from the IMDB page. "The engine plasma that blasts the alien away from the shuttle at the end of the movie is actually just tons of water pouring over the camera." ...and another one. =)

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 12:31 PM

Say! H.R. Giger directed six movies. A New Face of Debbie Harry (1982) Giger's Alien (1979) Giger's Necronomicon (1975) Tagtraum (1973) Swiss Made (1968) High and Heimkiller (1967) I have never heard of any of these.

Rayraz ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 1:21 PM

I don't think he directed Alien, he just designed a whole lot of it I think The Necronomicon is an art collection by gigger, but I've never heard of it making it into a movie. Swiss made, tagtroum, high and heimkiller I've never heard about. A New Face of Debby Harry rings a bell as if I've heard it befrore, but I don't know anything else about it. Giger also did Species.

There's actually a species of Wasp that stings it's prey and lays eggs inside the vicitms body. I also heard of a spider that does the same thing.

Legend has it that a woman was attacked by one of these and a big swelling formed in her arm? When the skin broke dozens of baby spiders ran out and she freaked big time....well who wouldn't?

Gross enough for ya? Ridly Scott directed ALIEN. Giger was brought in to do the icky stuff.....

Excellent job on the "biomechanical" textures and heightmap Pidjy! Many years ago when I lived in Hollyweird, I had the immense pleasure of attending the premiere of the movie "Alien" at the Egyptian Theater. The producers of the movie brought in many props and sets from the film, including the Giger sculpture of the alien pilot from the weird ship where the Alien "eggs" are first found. The sculpture was huge and was fabricated from(I believe) expanded polyurethane foam over a metal armature. I was able to spend at least a half an hour examining this incredible work of art. A few days later I read in the newspaper that some pinhead idiot vandal had used a cigarette lighter to set the sculpture on fire, and it was completely destroyed! It still makes me mad when I think of this!

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 10:19 PM

danamo-- Makes me mad too, just thinking about it. Honestly, how can some people be such idiots, so in need of attention, that they must destroy priceless works of art just to amuse themselves? Don't even get me started about the Dark Ages.... But it is interesting what you say about it. I didn't know that Giger did the alien pilot, though I never really thought about it. I would have guessed "yes", though. =) And it looks like one of my posts is missing. Stupid internet! What I said was that Giger's Alien and Giger's Necronomicon were both documentaries directed and narrated by H.R. Giger. They were about the art he did. I haven't heard of any of the other movies in the list.
