Subject: Tricks for Creating Realistic Mountains?

How do people create the really detailed mountains? Mine never seem to turn out very releastic. I am alos wondering about how people texture them. I'm about to call it quits on all the standard Vue materials. They just seem so fake.

Check the Backroom of the forum (link at the top of the page), especially the section about Terains. You can create realistic terrains two way : - one is to use DEM files, which are usually elevation maps of real geographic areas. - the other is to play with Procedural terrains. Check out the galleries of TROC and Collateral_Damage for greate examples of realistic terrains.

Wow! Those are great. Thanks for the links agiel. I'm going to check the backroom, but I did have one concern. I went to the US Geological survey site and couldn't find a place to download DEMs. It looks like they aren't giving them away either. Is there another place to get them?

Try there. Be sure to be patient and wait for the page to update when you are using the main map because the site can be very slow.

I sometimes use Terragen terrains for my mountains, especially if I want softer, rolling mountains. There is a little freeware program called Terrapainter that I use to convert the .ter files to .bmp files. Then I use those in the Vue terrain editor.

How about software convertors for Macs. Everything seems PC only.

You might also try a programme called World Machine: http://www.world-machine.com/ It's a very powerful procedural landscape generator that enables you to save the landscape as a .BMP file.

First of all, thanks for the aid. I've learned a lot from everyone. "You might also try a programme called World Machine" Sorry, I can't! I am running a Mac. Collateral Damage, thanks for the site link. I'm just not sure how to get them into Vue...every convertor I've seen is PC only...but hopefully I can find another Mac user who can help out with a Mac-Friendly convertor. Until then, what do you usually save them as? And when you view the maps, you check the elevation viewer, correct?
