I'm not really sure of this answer (I'm going to look into it)but I would think it would be Guests surfing would be making the difference in numbers :P Ryuslilangel Art Theory, Poser, and Texturing Moderator

I believe it has to do with the number of pages open...so if you have three pages open..it counts you as three.. makes a lot of sense right? :-) I dunno...that's how it was explained to me.. Earlier today I saw the count over 3000...I haven't seen that in a long time..if ever..

It's a mystery.

Yes Mark, you are correct...Mystery surfers..

sounds like an old 60's surf flick...or maybe an episode of Scooby Doo

Hmm.. I opened two new windows and it went down by ten...

:-(

I'm gonna hop in the Mystery Van with Shaggy and Daphne, and see what I can find out..

At times these numbers can reflect Google Bots or search engine bots that are indexing our web site. :) FYI, Clint

The additional numbers do include the number of people that are viewing Renderosity as "visitors". Some folks are just shy ;-) Best wishes, LillianH

Could it be people like me who never really log out making up the difference, I may be logged on but not even in the house or have my back turned cuz I'm at the other box or out shopping or asleep...just never log out...saves logging in...LOL peace bobby stahr

So then since guests are counted there is no way to really know whether membership is up or down. LOL

In my three some odd months here I have never seen surfers over 3000 before (and then it pops right back down to 1700 again lol). So at the very least it means that r'osity is getting more popular (more guests). Most likely those folks are mostly looking at the tutorials, though. That's what originally brought me here. Lycos.com found orbital's short cut atmospherics tut.

Hi bobby, Just wanted to mention that the sessions will time out after a short period of inactivity. So, even though you may have left the window open, after a little while that session activity would no longer show up in that surfers count up top. It's a case of "the windows open...but no ones online" ;-) Just wanted to clarify, Lillian

Having seen the code that runs this site many years back, that number reflects how many SQL threads have been active in X amount of time. (2 hours back then) So if you've open multiple windows in the past 2 hours, you are counted as being online multiple times. (the time lag may have been changed since then)
