Subject: OT Virus Alert!! Re: Webmaster@Renderosity.com

blonderella ( ) posted Tue, 07 June 2005 at 12:25 PM · edited Sat, 02 November 2024 at 8:41 AM

this is posted in the Terragen forum by AndyWelder, Terragen Moderator, and I sure hope it is okay to repost here to warn the Poser peeps also! Hi people, It appears that one of the recent virii sends emails to members of Renderosity. It appears to be coming from "webmaster@renderosity.com" and has a zip attached which well... contains a virus infected .EXE file. The text goes: We regret to inform you that your account has been suspended due to the violation of our site policy. If you receive(d) one of these: Don't open it as there is no webmaster@renderosity, deletete the darned thing. And don't mess with it in any otherway like "right-clicking" it to see the properties: This could trigger the trojan contained within. Take care, AndyWelder Terragen moderator

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

I got one last week from 'tech@daz3d'. It was titled 'Hey' and I was a bit suspicious, so I double-checked. Turned out it contained a 25kb 'details.zip' which was an MS-DOS app. Needless to say, I deleted it. I mailed vicky at DAZ (not the 3d figure - the sales/tech person) and she confirmed that it was nothing to do with them. She told me that other fake mails having been circulating lately using DAZ addresses. It seems that these low-lifes have discovered the poser community and sites. Be warned! mac

I'll get the police involved. They could be targetting other people online at other sites, not just us. Its our right to defend our selfs and we should use it.

I would like to give them a lethal injection of their own virus!

There is a way for you guys to find out where it coming from. Or better yet, a way to stop it. you can not send .exe files through gmail. trust me I tried.

It's a dangerous world out there, and the only real protection is don't open attachments, if it's unexpected, keep your patches and virus software up-to-date. You can contact the police if you wish, but my experience is the only way to get action is usually to definitively prove monetary damage. There's usually some floor, such as US$5,000. The damage claim has to be backed up by some kind of paperwork, like bills from consultants. "Lost time/productivity" doesn't usually cut the mustard. It's probably the "SoBig" virus, based on the filename used is "details.zip". Or it could also be the "Mydoom" virus, since it had "Hey" in the subject line. Both are well-known and would be caught by up-to-date anti-virus software.

There is no use rushing off to police or trying to track down who sent it, The very nature of most Viruses is that they pick a random address from the address book on the infected computer.

I have my own domain and hence my own email sever and I have even received viruses "from myself" even when I know my computer is clean.

Simple answer is don't open any file unless you know where it came from - and ask yourself "Would Daz or Renderosity send me an .exe file?"

On a lighter note, I read of a new worm that's doing the rounds on the file share programs. It poses as a DVD ripper ap, itself ripped off, and so is likely to only be downloaded by copyright theives. When run it displays an anti-copyright theft message and deletes any mp3 files in can find and a selected number of aps that are used for this brand theft. Its seems to do nothing beyond that. I won't condone it,quite, its still vandalism/vigilatism and I suppose it is conceivable (just) that a non-wrong doer could be clobbered but...just try and suppress a smile!

They are even doing it at where I work. We are getting emails at work claiming to be from tech support and if we don't respond, our email account at work will be suspended. I called our IT guy about it and he said it is phoney and to delete any we get, that if we had a problem he would call us personally.

:( It's not their hands or noses I'D cut off...but rather more personal bits of their anatomy :( Preferably with a very blunt knife !
