Relatively new to the material editor, and vue 5 is new to me. Can anyone recommend some good resources for someone who wants to learn more about editing materials, with an emphasis on working with functions. This is soemthing I've been meaning to do for quite some time.

Have a look in the "Backroom" here - link above. There are lots of tuts there, and some of the newer ones include working with various functions.

I've looked through the backroom, and I can't find anything relevant. I saw something on using functions for terrains, and maybe 2-3 more, but they're really specific, and I'm looking for more of an overview. It seems like everything is rather old too. Maybe I'm just not in the right spot?

This is an excellent request. Unfortunately, there are no general tutorials out there that I know of. The best starting point is the user manual, follwed by the specific examples here at R'osity, followed by looking at the function maps of the functions found in various materials. Add about 40 hours or so of trial and error and soon you'll be making all sorts of cool things. I think VUE should create a function primer or getting starter with functions tutorial to help speed up the learning curve.

Noooooo! Not the user manual!!! I hate to admit it, but your right. I was just hoping for a miracle. In one of my classes we are learning Swift 3D. I hate the program, but ERain did a lot of tutorials on their site to help people learn the program... although why people bother in the first place is beyond me...grrr. Anyway, it would be nice if e-on did that for the Vue community. Thanks for all the help, and I will definitly start poking around the innards of all my materials. That's a good idea.
