THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 5.01 and tiger (OS 10.4.1) problem

SevenOfEleven ( ) posted Tue, 24 May 2005 at 11:44 AM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 8:19 PM

I installed tiger and the update after it and now I can't do any file actions in Bryce. Try doing a file open and the dialog box does not come up. When I move the mouse down to the bottom of the screen for the dock, it does not show up either, so I figure the program is busy. Have reinstalled bryce 5.01. Anyone have some ideas on whats going on?

Sorry to say, it appears that only Bryce 5.5a works correctly under Tiger (4.0 or 4.1). But as I understand it you can load OS9 classic and run 501 from there (although I haven't tried this myself). I have a freind who is an Apple Developer and he told me that Apple is under a lot of pressure to do something about this. So all hope may not be lost ;-) Best; Dan

Thanks for the reply. Its pretty weird, I can see the file open dialog box when I stop the screensaver. I hate classic but maybe I can get the new bryce. Its pretty cheap but I don't like being forced to update.

Well, I just had this happen to me today, too. For me, Bryce seems to be working, until I try to do a file action, too-can't save anything, import, export, ect. I figure I can get Bryce 5.5, but does anyone know for sure that it works in Tiger? I hate to buy it and have the same problem. BTW-I've loaded the Classic OS9 from the Tiger installation CD, but I have the same problem in Bryce.

Prog - all I can say about 5.5a, is that it's working fine on a 733 G4 OS10.4.0. I installed 10.4.1 today and for the little time I had to mess with it, all the file stuff seems to work OK. I've also talked to another 5.5a Mac user that also reports that it works under Tiger.

Where can I get Bryce 5.5A? Right now I just have Bryce 5.5 from Daz and I went to Daz's update section. Just loaded a 80 meg bryce scene from the Pc version (5.01), lets see if that works. Its stuck at 72% so it could be choking on it. If it can't handle that file then I will not install it on my PC without more study. The PC can handle this file. So far I am not impressed. I don't want to seem whiny but since I paid for the software, I do expect it to be able to be easily slotted into my workflow with a minimum of trouble. Anyone know how to do a force quit on a OS X mac from the keyboad?

I'm using the boxed version which says it's 5.5a, so I'm not at all sure of what's up with the DLs. Cmd+Option+Esc to force quit.

Also noticed that some scene files do not have the .br5 extenstion, they are not recognized. Will talk to Daz Tech support about the nonloading scene. Will also try taking the scene apart a bit and reloading some parts into Bryce 5.5. Thanks for the reply.

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 2:49 AM

Use automator to batch add the .br5 extension to all your bryce scene files?

SevenOfEleven ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 9:26 AM

Don't need automator for that since I have to update the latest scene file from each project. I can do that by hand. I am more worried about the 80 meg problem. Don't want to break up pictures and reload elements. For simple pictures, it might be ok but complicated scenes it would be a pain. I do have plans to use Automator for project backup.

Was there an import in the file? I've had one problem file that would get to the same place every time and then I'd get the SBOD. Same file loaded fine in B501. So by removing stuff and saving and then loading into 5.5a I discovered that it was just one part of an .OBJ import. Running the .OBJ through UVMapper and loading this fixed the problem. This problem is also being reported by 2 people over at the DAZ Bryce forum, so you're not alone. Be sure and report this to DAZ, the more people who submit there the better the chances it'll get fixed soon!

Thanks for the reply. The picture was made of stuff I modeled myself. Don't know if that is what you mean by "Import". Took the big scene and deleted some parts. Loaded it into Bryce 5.5 with no problems. Loaded up the 3 parts into Bryce 5.5 and saved them into the user objects list. Then I loaded them into the scene in Bryce 5.5 and there were no problems. The scenes were made by the PC version of Bryce (5.01)and the 5.5 version is on the Mac. Since I make models with different parts I just use Bryce materials and I don't have to use UVMapper.

Does Bryce 5.5 render to disc? I like to have 300dpi and 14x 10.5 size for my finished pictures. I bought 5.5 but will not use it if it does not.

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sun, 05 June 2005 at 8:16 AM

Yup - look under the File Menu. Just remember that it's not restartable, you'll have to wait for the whole process to finish or you'll lose it.

snewkirk ( ) posted Thu, 09 June 2005 at 11:25 PM

Thanks so much for the reply. I do know about the non-restart bit as I tried to render a very large render three times with 2 power interruptions ...... Took 3 months.(grin) Finally did it in two pieces and put together in photoshop. I have 5.5 on both machines now ......keeping my fingers crossed.

I heard something about Bryce 5.5 getting confused with permissions on Macs. Don't know if its true but I will check it out.
