Writers F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 11 12:54 am)
Congratulations on the job. I understand what you mean by not wanting to jinx the project. Lovecraft is one of those writers that you either hate for his excesses or love for his dark imagination. Fortunately for you, his stories are readily available on the Internet or your local library. I hope you keep us posted on how this proceeds. A lot of us have no clue what really goes into creating a film.
Will do.. I did some Special Effects for the Short film "Revelation" And NO not the StarWars fan film or the one just shown on TV..This was an independent film about an EYE for an EYE for killing someone and their unborn Child... Death/Grim Reaper ended up taking the life of the killer and when they showed Deaths face lol and Behold there was the killers Face looking back at him...I did the Special effects with a Note handed to the Killer by Death and some of the Lighting Effects...Even got to do Heavens Light Coming out of the killers Throat... I will see if I can make an animated Gif of a few seconds of the effects and such....
Sixus1 has some very cool mythos models, if you need some inspiration. Doesn't really tell you anything about Lovecraft, but he has an interesting interpretation of what the old ones look like. The short film sounds cool. I have no clue how to do special effects, but it has to be fun (and perhaps frustrating) to see the concept turn into the actual film. I think writers have no idea that when they write something casually into a screenplay ("...and then his head splits apart and reveals a brain made of insects....") what it will take to make that happen on the screen.
I used to subscribe to Cinefantastique (CFQ now, I guess) when it focused on the behind the scenes of special effects (I dropped the subscription so I don't know what it is focusing on these days). Really fascinating stuff...to see how the computer and the reality is merged, and how the special effects used to be done. It's almost all too easy now...it's set expectations up rather high, but the stories are getting lost behind the effects in some cases.
Wonderful stuff foleypro. Lovecraft is legend and I'm sure you know influenced all major writers of horror today. I have a fair collection of his materials and have loved his work for years - the tendrils of his writing always seem to creep into my work. It's a shame that much of his work has been over-analysed, but you can see clear parallels between his approach and that of say, Stephen King. For example, Lovecraft created a fictional town of Arkham and King also created his Castlerock which reverberates throughout his work. Reanimator also made some good cult watching. I congratulate you again and am very envious. When I think of Lovecraft, I think of 'unspeakable terror'. Thus, much of the atmosphere is created by what is not seen, or not seen so clearly. Good luck and keep us informed. Eco (a newcomer to the forum)
