Can anyone tell me what Flash .swf is? I was setting up an animation in Poser6 and saw a render to flash! What is it used for and does it require any special player? arrow1

I believe swf stands for "Shockwave Flash". The extension .swf is indicative of a movie created in the program "Flash", which is put out by "Macromedia". As for viewing it, I've viewed .swf files, I don't believe you need any special program to view them. I've viewed movies on the net that are .swf extensions and they just load and view in the browser window.

Arrow, I sent you a PM with a link showing an example of a movie saved in .swf format.

You need the Flash player but it's pretty ubiqutous today. It may even come bundles with some browsers. If not, the first time you hit a page with an embedded .swf, you'll be prompted to download it (or update it as needed). Flash was originally devoted pretty much to doing vector graphics like the morphing shapes and letters you see on some pages. Over the years, it has evolved as Macromedia (now or soon to be part of Adobe) added new capabilities. Today, they're pushing Flash technology to create complete dynamic interfaces, much like DHTML or Javascript. I don't know how it compares for 3D with Viewpoint, Metastream etc. but for an installed base of players, Flash beats just about anything.

If you keep your images simple in Poser, you can get some pretty cool web animations by exporting with the flash ".swf" format.

To view a few made different ways (the "endless summer" thing was done with Poser, the others were combinations of other Macromedia products, like "FreeHand" that will also export to flash file format), hop to my website, click on the illustration link, and down to the animated section.

Another big asset of flash files, aside from animation and being viewer interactive, is that you can take very intricate graphics that would fall apart when viewed as a jpeg file and make them as flash files... they can be zoomed in and out and panned around just by clicking the right mouse button and choosing your option from the drop-down menu - - you can try this with this full-page newspaper graphic I did at http://www.nateowens.com/beta/moxwebest.swf
It is about 585k size.

As Imckenzie says, most browsers incorporate the player and the download (if not) is free.
