Subject: Runtime Management

Hi all, I use P6, and currently have numerous runtimes. I usually separate out into runtimes based on original figure. So I have some nice small runtimes for such characters as Elle, Natalia etc. The problem is that I have a massive collection of Poser files for some of the DAZ characters such as V3 and M3. I have heard that P6 runs a lot faster if you have small runtimes. Therefore I am wondering if there are people who, like me, have large collections for the DAZ characters, but who have split them up into smaller runtimes.... ... if so, how do you normally split them up ? ... I need some ideas. thanks and regards, Andrew

I have a Millennium People Runtime, but there is no poser.exe or runtime folder in it. It's just a folder that I store my Millennium People runtimes. I have a clothing runtime, and a chararcter addons runtime in there for each of the millennium figures. When I add a runtime in Poser, I don't use the top folder, instead I add the individual ones inside it. IE: M3 character addon runtim, M3 clothing runtime, V3 character addon runtime, V3 clothing runtime. I find that sorting runtimes by "theme" such as character addons, or clothing, or lighting, or props, or poses, or faeries, or hair, helps to keep runtimes smaller, and it's also easier to locate things because you know you will only find "hair" in the hair runtime, and "V3 character addons" in the "V3 character addon runtime". That way you don't have to scroll through the poses folder past morph injections and folders for SP3, or any other figure. Not sure if that's what you were asking, but hope it helps.

Thanks. Sort of, do you have a ginormous collection of DAZ files ? ..... also, are you saying that you keep runtimes within runtimes (e.g. like a hierarchy of runtimes) ?

Since this was brought up, I am also starting to break down my P6 runtimes. How many runtimes are optimum? And wouldn't too many confuse the program?

I am making myself crazy trying to figure out a runtime system that works. Right now I am trying runtimes by source... Runtime DAZ, Runtime MP, Runtime PoserWorld, Runtime FreeStuff, Etc. since I seem to rember stuff by where I acquired it and it wasn't working for me to break things down by character because of overlap and clutter Pose directory with MAT pose folders mixing me up even though I did try to group and rename them. I can't tell yet if this is working. I am very frustrated by inscrutible library folder names and referanced files folder names and deep deep nested texture and geometry folders. I am sorry to say, I only rember the "names" of major vendors... for the rest I really wish I did not have to rename the folders to what they actually contain such as "Leslie Platform Shoes V2" and even some major vendors have a serious lack of consistancy so that I find thier files all over the place. I would love file set ups like the hypothetical: character/BreezyLongHair pose/BreezyLongHair textures/BreezyLongHair Geometry/BreezyLongHair instead of like character/Articulated Props pose/!!!APbreezy MAT textures/AP/infinate/haers geometry/AP/mesh/hairs/BLHv2 I actually have some file distributions worse than that from commercial content, ones where some folder start with the author name and some with the product name (which is rarely descriptive) and then in geometry the folder name choice is an utter mystery to me. Oy! But the real problem for me is how to organize the runtimes! And does anyone actually know what a good size is and whether the location (given a single drive partition) matters? Subjectivly my start up was slower when my alternate runtimes folders were in an "alternate runtime" folder in my Poser 6 folder rather than where I have them right now in my top C: directory. Is there anyway to get my Poser to default to a certain runtime even if I forget to go to it before quiting? If that has to involve start up on Factory Preferance can I some how hack the James figure out of that start up? Substitute a .pz3 somewher is my guess? ---sorry for the rant---

I decided to sort my runtimes by theme. I have just finished installing my Animals runtime. I am starting this morning to install my People runtime. Then I'll go on to Scenes, Fantasy, Utilities, Clothing, Jewels, Accessories, Hair, etc. I tried it and I like it so far but now I have to get organized. Since October, I have about 1/10 of my Poser stuff installed and I want to install it all so I could get to play with it. ;o) France

Also, does anyone else have trouble with Poser not being able to find files referanced by relative path name in the alternate runtimes? ---sorry about the typos above - bondware would not let me edit the post---

Navigating Poser's runtime(s) is cumbersome no matter which way you organize it/them ;-)

No, sorry for not being clear. The "Millennium People Runtimes" is just the name of the folder that contains all of the runtimes for my millennium figures.... 2 folders (clothing and character addons) for each one. The folders that are added to the poser library, are the folders inside the "millennium people runtimes" folder.

I have lots of runtimes. The ones that I currently have linked to poser are: V3 character addons V3 clothing SP3 character addons SP3 clothing runtime M3 character addons M3 clothing D3 character addons D3 clothing Hair and Nails Lighting Props and Poses Bg and Environments Faeries Mermaids For purposes of Wardrobe Wizard converting, I also have the following: V2 Clothing P4 Woman Clothing P5 Woman Clothing I also have 7 or maybe 8 that I use periodically but not frequently enough to warrant having them connected to Poser all the time. I add them when I feel like working on that figure or theme (IE: animals, furette etc) **************************** The clothing runtimes are divided up into: "morphing" and then futher by outfit and sometimes merchant if I have more than one outfit from that merchant "Misc" and further by outfit and sometimes merchant if I have more than one outfit from that merchant as in the case of Baron, or Daz "Shoes" and further by merchant The character addons runtimes are divided up by merchant and then further by character ********************************* My method is to open the character addons runtime, load my desired figure and then go to that runtimes poses folder and pick my character addon. Next I go to hair, select the hair. Then I go to the clothing runtime and find clothing. I may have to make a trip back to the hair folder and change the hair. Next I fit the clothing. Go to Poses add a pose, adjust clothing Go to Lighting, select my lighting, and then render. I have the runtimes added in by amount of use. Hair/props and poses/lighting all get the top 3 spots. The millennium figures get added in alphabetcial order. Other runtimes below those in order of use. I tend to use faeries more than mermaids, so they are above mermaids in the hierarchy. I hardly ever use backgrounds, so they are at the bottom....should really remove them altogether, but I keep hoping that oneday I'll manage to figure out how to put a background in and render a whole image instead of a tube. I am a creature of habit and do not adjust well to changes at all, so when I first started with multiple runtimes, I found myself slowing gravitating back to one because I found that some clothing is for both SP3 and V3, and with the help of Cliff from Daz, I managed to work out a system that is tailor made for me and is well within my comfort level and highly organized. If there is a clothing package that is for multiple characters, I install that package to each figure's clothing runtime. All hair, regardless of who it's for is put into the hair folder, as are poses. I still get thrown for a loop when some character addon's contain lighting, poses and clothing, but I have decided to install those into the character addon's runtime and look for those types of things in the character's personal folder inside of the poses folder. I have alot of sub folders, but I never have a problem locating anything. I know exactly where things are because after installing anything, I go to the library folder and rename the newly installed folders to " - " or - ". In the cases of clothing where they have oodles of textures IE: MFD, the dress and all of it's textures get put into it's own folder inside the 'morphing clothes" folder, for easy location. I downloaded some things from Poser World the other day, and I installed one clothing file at a time and then went to that runtime and renamed it to "PW - ". I did that for each of the folders in the library folder. So now when I want to use the Greek guy with all the props, I can find them because they are all named the same throughout the library. (DON'T RENAME THE TEXTURES OR GEOMETRIES STUFF) It sounds complicated, but it's really not. It makes so much sense once you actually start to do it.

I only use one runtime, but I went through and rearranged figures, poses and props into subfolders so they're easier to navigate. I keep the old zipsso if I need to figure out who something is by, I can go look, but otherwise I arrange stuff into standardized folders like "Furniture" "Scenes" "Furnishings" "Clothing" "Accessories" and from there, break down by model of necesary. (For the most part, I use V3 for everything, so I don't have alot to worry about as far as that goes. For the poses, I broke things down into subfolders by clothing/scene/furtniture/character/whatever mats, actual poses, and P1-6 default content. It doesn't make the program itself run faster, but it sure makes it easier for me to find stuff, and THAT speeds me up alot!

Acadia ( ) posted Fri, 17 June 2005 at 11:12 PM

That's what I did at first too. But I found that it was taking forever for Poser to load up. Now it loads almost instantly after clicking the icon. I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I also found that rendering time was improved when I went to multiple runtimes. In addition, I can burn off the runtimes of things like "animals", or "furette" that I use, but don't use all of the time, and I save on hard drive space.

Just to see if anyone else does this: I have my runtimes organized according to end-user license. That is, I have one for "Commercial-Safe" where I put anything that explicitly allows use in commercial renders, and another where I put everything else (i.e., anything that specifically says "non-commercial use only", or doesn't explicitly say anything).

Mind you, I haven't yet actually done anything commercially, but this way, if/when I do, I can be sure that as long as I stick to the "Commercial-Safe" runtime, I won't be violating any user licenses.

Acadia, I like the way that you have broken up your runtimes, sounds like a good idea. I am wondering if Poser chokes up if you have a lot of runtimes (as opposed to few runtimes each with lots of files in them) ? regards, Andrew

Acadia ( ) posted Sat, 18 June 2005 at 7:16 AM

Some of my runtimes are stuffed and I haven't had a problem.

Also, I noticed that this board ate some of my text earlier... the folder names. I guess I used an HTML tag and it ate it, LOL
