Most of the places that you bought your models from will let you re-download them for free. I had a c-drive that crashed early this year, and everyone was great about letting me re-download. And of course, I saved everything else to disc so it was just a matter of re-loading it. Did you have your stuff backed up?
nope i didnt had my stuff backed up... i kept meaning to but never got around to it :-/ so i guess i had to start over... thankfully i saved most of programs and poser was one of them i was hoping it didnt corrupt while burning it to my cd... it didnt which was rather surprising... i was burning everything on my cd but never got around with my models or items for it. so i lost those. im using easy recovery program hoping it will get me what i wanted... but so far... i discovered i have over 2,000 files of all types including system files. so it takes quite a while for me to browse thorugh. i did found most of my webdesign software but dunno if it will work since it takes specific file not group it up and i dont have serial nbr for it .... i lose it in saved wordpad... how stupid of me huh? lol i also saved passwords on wordpad on pc so ill tell u this... never again!!!!
You Never Format if you have stuff you don't want to lose...Did you have a back up CD or you could have used system restore if you have win xp....Sorry that you lost all of your stuff tho...I was lucky went I first started using computers I knew someone I could call for help if anything went wrong...Started with a 486DX win 95..lol..
Well that is why I bought my DVD-R drive, so I could backup without needing some exotic thingies. Well, this is a good opportunity to organize the Runtime =)
still hooked to real life and enjoying the siesta!

There goes another one..;) I do sympathize, I've spent the most of 2 decades watching this happen to clients.
I'm a bit puzzled about the XP being professional, and the CD being 'home'? Unless I'm missing something, the CD is hardware; as long as the drivers are available, the CD should work. You can usually download the drivers from the company that made the CD.
Safe mode would be a good idea, it skips a lot of the extraneous files. As long as you're not getting messages like 'kernel error', etc., you should be able to get something back.
I'm not sure about XP Pro (we have a server build, so we do reimages off the network), but on NT and other operating systems, there's usually a 'repair' option, that you can run off the original CD's..this fixes a lot of problems.
Last/bruteforce/option- just made that name up, but a thought; if you go up to the header here for the Poser forum, download the graph that good Dr. Geep created, you could find the filename extensions and make sure you back them up (getting the paths right might be another problem, but it's a last-ditch effort).
I've lost stuff on a hard drive before (back in the 386 days, and even more in the 286 and 8088 chipset days..tol' ya I go back..;), so I'm a firm beleiver in backups..I have CDs, 250meg tape backups (a lost cause, since I don't have a tape drive, but lesson learned..use a commonly available backup medium)..hope I haven't bored anyone too much..;)
I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

And a helpful tip for "backing up" your serial numbers and unlock keys - I keep a special section of my rolodex just for that. Each piece of software has it's own card with all the codes on it. I stick it in the back behind all the regular stuff. That way, even if the system crashes or I lose the e-mail txt file, I still have the numbers I need. Kate
to answer paklad's question... there are two different types of win xp... one is professional edition which i can host and use it for webdesigning and everything u name it that have it... it also includes excel and everything.... for first time im using home edition and i do not see any options anywhere about excel or other word processor programs which was usually included in professional and with home edition u cant host automatically im not sure how it works with home edition yet but in the manual faq where someone asked that they had a website hosting on pc and its gone its only cuz home edition doesnt support that. those are just a few difference in those two different software... they both are win xp just one have different features than other. so i cant use home edition on a xp professional to repair... dont ask me why i couldnt, it just refuse to allow me. is it more clear for you? :) btw if anybody is willing to give me any aiko 3 stuff id take them and will trade something somehow or pay back somehow. (in other words i would appeciate any willing donations with aiko 3)

Been there not to long ago. IBM mother board, cheeper to buy a new computer. I was able to have the old HD installed so all those files were saved, But all the disks I had can't be read by the new system, so I lost all that. Shame, was all the old Bat stuff and most of the Japan and PoserFashion stuff that you can't get anymore or you have to buy it now. All my paid for stuff I was able to re-DL with no problems or I bought History burns and don't need to worry about that again. Hard lesson to learn. Back up everything.
Been there done that several times. I had problem that I didn't know about till the computer finally just gave up the ghost and died. The bad thing I found out later that really pissed me off was all the back up CD's that I made using that computer are completely unreadable on any other computer! Some screwy was going on I guess in the file system. The disk would read in the computer as long as it was working but not on any other computer or at best every came out corrupted. The bad thing about all this more that really hurt was that I lost all the old BatLab stuff and I really really missed some those and some other of the old props and stuff that are no longer available. Now I back up on an external hard drive, then to a DVD as well as a CD just so I can make sure that I have at least one good copy of my files
I have a gazillion CD's burned with my files. I learned 3 weeks after I got my first computer (a total lemon), the value of burning CD's to save stuff. That was 5 years ago, and I've reformatted many times since then and have only lost files to corrupt CD's. 3 CD's worth of files over 5 years is not a bad average. If you have a CD or DVD burner, use it. It's probably your most valuable piece of hardware next to the computer itself.

LOL! My symphaties to ya, SpiceHD! I'm pretty the same type: got all of my stuff all zipped and ready to get burned out, but everytime i want to actually do it i start thinking: "wait, today i want to work a bit on that, so if i do the backup tomorrow i'll get the updated version..." So i never do and everytime PC decides to get a vacancy i start cursing at the gremlins (inside the PC)! LOL! PS @ pakled: i think i beat ya - i started losing things with ruined tapes on the commodore 64! :D Bye, Grim
Can't say i remember the speed since i had no internet connection at the time, but i remember my first painting program - i think it was called Koala Painter or something: 320x200 (actually 160x200) and 16 colors - Wheee! High-re graphics!! LOL! And i managed to s**k at that just as i do now in Photoshop! LOL! Bye, Grim
