Subject: Cannot Access My Preferences! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Help Me, Mac People!

Saro ( ) posted Sat, 18 June 2005 at 11:28 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 7:37 AM

I hit a major snag trying to import poser figures to Vue 5 and apparently I need to uncheck a certain feature in my Poser preferences. My problem is that the Preference option is grayed out in my menu.

If I cannot change this, all of my poser models end up in their default pose once they are imported, so I really need to get this solved.

FYI-I AM NOT ON A PC, so please don't give me PC advice.

Here are my specs:
Mac OS 2.8
Poser 5
Vue Esprit 5

Hmmm that's odd. Maybe try reinstall poser 5 but copy your runtimes elsewhere and any other original stuff. see if the preference thingy is there in the bare poser installation, if not then you may have to upgrade your os to 10.3 love esther

I aim to update it about once a month.  Oh, and it's free!

OSX 10.2.8? Any other Poser windows (floaters) up? Certain menu items are not available while the Python log is up. Sometimes it helps to go to menu "About Poser" and then back. If that doesn't help you could try to put the Poser prefs file in the trash (and evtl. back) and try then.

I was thinking of re-installing my basic Poser 5, so I'll give it a go...we'll see what happens. Thanks for the responses :)

Since you have your serial number, you could always simply delete (or do what I do) move the preference (plist) out of its appropriate folder which is in the Preferences folder of the Library of your own Account.. i.e. Users/bradpitt/Library/Preferences/Poser6.plist and move the Poser Prefs out of the Poser6/ Runtime/Prefs folder. It probably should prompt you again for your serial number, and "bang goes the dynamite".

Are you trying to export a Poser 5 figure as a wavefront.obj file? If so, which Preference options are greyed out? Perhaps you mean "export options", because the general preference screen has few options. I haven't heard of it being disabled before, although I have heard cases of some wavefront.obj export options being greyed out. In Panther and Jaguar, the Poser preferences file is not a plist file, but is in Runtime/prefs, along with many xml files. I suspect that one of those xml files is the problem in your case, probably the one that controls the display of the menu that's giving you trouble.

Reinstalled Poser 5 and it didn't work... "Are you trying to export a Poser 5 figure as a wavefront.obj file" No. Vue allows you to import scenes, so I am using the pz3 files. I've never had a problem until I changed the Vue settings from Poser 4 to Poser 5. I may just have to keep the settings for Poser 4... nemesis10- I tried moving the preference lists...it didn't ask me for a serial number. I'm stumped! I've tried re-installing Poser 5 and moving the preference lists. The stupid Preferences option is still grayed out. I think I am just going to have to set Vue to import from Poser 4 instead of P5. Either that or uninstall, and then re-install the whole program...

Have you tried to repair the permissions?

I'm guessing now that it's one of the Vue menu options that's greyed out, not anything in the Poser menus. Maybe they would know in the Vue forum. However, if a program stops working like it used to work, it may indicate that the system software is corrupt. Not sure if re-installing Poser would cure a Vue glitch, but I doubt it.

Sorry, went on vacation, so my response is overdue. The Poser preference thing is still grayed out (not the Vue menu) so I have just set Vue to Poser 4 imports instead. There is no way way for me to change the required option in Poser. But thank you for all the advice. I think I may have to go straight to CL and ask them to help.
