THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT. Hot Linking!

johnyf ( ) posted Mon, 20 June 2005 at 9:04 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 10:11 AM

Hi guys, Just discovered that another site is linking to mine for one of the obp's I have available. It's actually one of jedswindells ships. Now I'm pretty sure Jed wouldn't mind this guy offering it from his site, it is meant to be freely available after all, but I'm damned if I'm going to pay for it! So, was wondering if anyone knows of anything that can stop this. I've seen something that's supposed to stop links to images, but it just talks about image files, also it doesn't work with windows? I would appreciate any advice! Cheers - John.

John i just talked to a game admin that had the same problem with a couple of things on his site. He re-named the files. Try changing the file name to jedslobster.zip, if that fails you then you can contact the webmaster of the site that is linking to it and ask him not to continue with it because he does not have the owner of the model's permission or yours to do this.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Thanks CD, I don't know if it's because it's now 3.30am, but I'm having a problem seeing just how that is going to stop him.lol Surely he can just copy the link location again. Also the site looks Russian, so I can't make out any contact info.

Yes you can, using .htaccess files. Have a look at This Thread in the copyright forum. From that thread are links to here and here, both about htaccess.

Just point the link back to his/her site lol.

I never intended to make art.

Or just change the name and link on your site like CrazyDawg said. If someone ends up paying just for a link to something that's free at your site and ends up with an .obj of a cube - there'll be some 'splaining to do. (And not on your end) Heheh... ;)

If anyone here has an .htaccess file on their server and would like to test it out on images, you can go to the URL I've provided. http://altlab.com/htaccess_tutorial.html Enjoy!

My god i can't believe that guy that runs that site. He has links to Fairweathertempest.com(alarm clock), drawbridgep's crab and cruiser on there plus a few other models i know of which are not his. One being Mahrays spray can Those that have models i have mentioned go to his site and look in the bryce downloads. Contact tripod, it seems he is using them for his site.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

The spray can is in the Public Domain, so if this person wants to offer it, all they have to do is host it themselves. The interesting one is the Daz Bryce Content Kit, I'll email them to let them know.

Contact your ISP and give them the url of the offending site and they will usually close them down. My host just has me rename the files then he uses the 'linked names' on some very nasty porn to replace the files, stops the deep linking right quick...=)

Also offering Eovia's Carrara 3 for download, I've emailed them as well. If anyone knows the email for copyright agents at Daz and Eovia, it might be worth giving them a shot. I know Cooler is Daz's agent, but he hasn't logged on here for quite some time. Note to Mods: Worth moving to Copyright forum? Mahray {RenderGods}

Thanks Mahray and everyone. I'll try the .htaccess thing. Didn't really checkout who else was being ripped off!. Funny thing, I got a feedback form from my site today from a Russian girl telling me I was being hot linked!

Well I've stopped him ok! The link is a great site for easily dealing with this problem!

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 21 June 2005 at 12:02 PM

Yeah. I just discovered some guy in Iran or somewhere was using the image from the index page of my personal site on his. Used that htmlbasix script generator and the image disappeared from his site! >:-) What's interesting for people here, you can specify additional sites that can access your images, so you can put picsies here and host them on your site. Like, when you want to just show something as a wip or something.
