before & after NYC it was Kansas City, Mo... another big city... so Austin, TX felt small when I went there in comparison... & now... it's MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! land... hehe :] was wondering where you were at Marlene... NYC was a blast though when I lived there... I was a latchkey kid & got around fine on my own... when I think of my daughter doing it though it makes me cringe...

You guys are fun to watch chat. 8] My folks are from NY orginially but I never lived there. I wouldn't want to really. I like having access to a city but preferr to live in the country...even though I'm not really there yet. I do love all the lights though, it reminds me of other big citys I've been in around the world like Hong Kong, Seoul, Okinawa...except all the signs are in English. ;] If there are any other photos Pascale, I'd love to see them, even if you made them into a small collage for this or another thread. --Kort

Sounds like you did a lot of traveling Marlene! I was an Air Force brat and we followed my dad on his overseas tours. Aside from various stateside locations, I got to live in Germany, Hawaii and Okinawa, and toured the neighboring countries during those stays. I was too young to truly appreciate Germany, but Hawaii and Okinawa and the Far East countries were amazing. Yes, if Pascale doesn't mind, I'd enjoy seeing more. =]

I guess I'll wait to see what Pascale wants...So you were in the Orient as a child too.My Dad was an importer so for two summers my Mom and I joined him as he did business.I was often the only american child wherever we went.We used to visit the army base in Korea. It was the only place we could see movies in English and I relished that we could get potato chips there.Otherwise I was stuck with those ucky rice cracker things as a snack.NOT very appealing to a kid!!!...Ooops sorry Pascale.I know this is off-topic! :)

YES!!! Israel!!! Oh my! I totally fell in love with that country and cried my eyes off when I had to leave! :( I'm a desert girl! The desert makes me cry and I dunno why..it feels like home for some reason.... I travelled to a few places in Europe too, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Belgium, and also Corsica, Tunisia and Sicilia but those last 3 don't really counts cos I was a kid so I barely remember it! And then the Carribeans where I stayed 5 months, and Thailand, India, Turkey, America (yes, yes) and Israel...I think that's about it! There's so many other places I want to go to! But the Orient is definitely my kinda place! Not the far East though, I didn't really enjoy Thailand, but the Proche Orient, Arabic countries! Yep!

Wooo, sounds like some interesting and exotic locals Pascale. I hope to visit many of them one day. I really did enjoy Thailand though. Sure, very crowded and wouldn't want to live there, but what a place to visit! The temples and jungles and streetmarkets...not to mention the canals a la James Bond in The Man With The Golden Gun...such a colorful place. I would swear I saw the same old man washing in the canals as the one in the movie (see link).

Here's a pic that has been taken in India. This is a wedding sari and a real brainteaser to put on!! LOL! This is on the roof of the shop where I bought the tapisseries! The woman in green sari at the back is the wife of the shop owner who was a real jerk and walked me in his bedroom supposedly to show me some more tapisseries but once there, wanted to have sex with me while his wife was waiting outside the bedroom! And when I told him I wasn't interested, the guy was really surprised and told his wife I refused to sleep with him and she was kinda surprised too! And I was just in complete disbelief!! This is when he offered me to try on his wife wedding's sari! I just didn't know how to escape the bloody situation so I accepted! But she had to help me put it on cos it's just made of veils that u have to wrap around u in a certain way to make it hold and look decent! LOL! It was an interesting experience...! O_o

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Tue, 21 June 2005 at 2:25 PM

Ah yes Kort it is a very interesting country indeed and I loved those marvellous Golden temples and giant Buddhas BUT I didn't enjoy the people there really! They just see us, tourists, as huge bank notes and that's all they care about! I didn't feel any spiritual connection there like I did in all my other travels where I met fantastic and TRUE people! I know I can go back to Israel and India in 10 years time and I will be welcome by the people I met there 15 years ago! I never got to create any bonds with any locals in Thailand! They smile a lot when U arrive somewhere but the smile disappears when they realize u're not gonna buy anything! I really felt out of place in Thailand! It's not the kind of things I'm after when I travel!

TwoPynts ( ) posted Tue, 21 June 2005 at 2:35 PM

Gotcha, I know what you mean. That's one reason I won't go to Jamaica. Well, if you ever want to travel to exotic South Florida, I'll make you and Laurent feel right at home. I even have some tapisseries I'd like to show you. ;] lol

What, and risk the wrath of Laurent?...I don't think so! (hahahaha) But yes, if you are ever in the area, at the very least least a visit would be in order. We could swap travel stories. I do hope that one day I get to actually meet in person some of the great people I've come to know here on RO--and that most definately includes you. Besides, you know you want to check out the gators living in my back yard. (( grin ))

Ooh Pascale if you ever go to Florida and visit Kort you must tell me! I'll go visit my mom the same time since she lives nearby!Wouldn't that be fun!...I loved Israel by the way,and also cried when I left.I met such amazing people there!Lol at Kort.I've been to Jamaica and was shocked when they tried to sell us weed right at the airport! Can be kinda a scary place, too, if you don't stick to the touristy spots...Pascale your sari story is a real jaw-dropper.How creepy! That guy would have made my skin crawl and his wife waiting there like that!UGH!I guess I would have put on the sari too!Unfortunately did you know that now that means you are married to him?...Just kidding!:)Wish I had a pic of me in some exotic locale.Unfortunately all I have is me in New York the other night!Don't get away too much these days.

U bet I'll tell u!!!! Do u really think I would go to the States without telling u to bring ur butt to meet me?? U're dreaming sweety! ;P And u went to Israel too!!! Oh my!! When??? and where? In the Carribbeans, I was in Martinique and they do sell grass everywhere too and man, it's good stuff!!! LOL! I had a blast with Ganja there!! ;) As for India and the sari, well, the same happened in Turkey! I have some pics with my head covered with one of those veil women wear on their head! It seems that in Arabic countries they have that thing about dressing me up! LOL! I've learnt something in Israel though that makes a few things much clearer, is that for Arabic people, blue eyes bring good luck and push away the evil or something and dark haired blue eyed people and especially women are very "prized". A guy in the Arabic quarter in Jerusalem wanted to take me home with him! sigh It's crazy all the things that happen when u travel! Not always funny at the time though! And I'm still waiting to see those pics of u in NY btw! ;P Whenever u'll feel like it sweety huh! O_o

lol!!! Don't do that silly! It's actually a pretty cool thing! They invite u around just to have ur company so u bring good luck in their home and shops! Hehe! ;) Clever huh! The thing is, it's an Israeli friend that translated what the guy was saying! He spoke Arabic and pretended to be English cos it was quite hot for him to be in the Arabic quarter! It was the first time he went there and he was scared, I can tell u that much! So the shop owner spoke in Arabic, thinking we wouldn't understand but David did! He also suspected that David was Isreali! Man, it's hard to realize how things are down there....
