Welcome to our first 'workshop' series of challenges.

The theme selected for this first round is : Texture this scene

Everybody will start with the same basic scene to
texture. Use the scene provided in attachment. Since summer is around the corner, I hope you will have fun texturing this one, especially the postcard :)

The scene will give you the occasion to play with glass, ice, plastic, wood, metal, liquids and cloth.

The glass, straw and ice cubes are original models I created for the occasion. The pencil and table are default objects included with Vue - I retextured them with 'blank' materials.

  • You can add some props as long as they do not distract from the main scene. Use only props included in your version of Vue
or props that can be distributed freely as part of the scene.

  • You can change the atmosphere and lighting conditions.

  • You cannot change the camera settings and point of view, with the exception of some blur if you want to add a depth of field effect to the scene.

Please post your work in progress in a separate discussion thread to allow comments. Post your final entry in the discussion thread with the announcement of the workshop (the thread you are currently reading).

I hope you have fun with this little exercise ! I can't wait to see what you will come up with...

Some clarifications :
  • the file is about 4 Mb.

  • the workshops are open to everyone.

  • the scene has been created under Vue 4 and tested in Vue 5 and Vue 5 Infinite. I assume it will work well with Vue 4 Pro as well.

  • contact me if you have any difficulty using this scene.

  • I will create a separate .vob file for the glass, ice cubes and straw and post it in the freestuff section in a couple of days.

  • Use the attached link if you want to suggest new ideas for workshops or if you want to learn more about workshops. I will create a 'workshops' section in the backroom as soon as possible.

  • The workshop is open until we decide to move on :) I will wait for two weeks after the last entry is posted to start a new workshop. Past workshops will remain open at all time.

One more tip - if you don't want to use the background plane and use your own landscape instead, simply make the texture of the background plane transparent :)

Great and thank you. This is fun.

Collateral_Damage ( ) posted Thu, 23 June 2005 at 6:36 PM

Excellent! Is this just function based textures or are bitmaps allowed?

agiel ( ) posted Thu, 23 June 2005 at 7:09 PM

Bitmaps are ok, as long as they are yours.

Sorry for my bad english, but what is a prop? I see the word used a lot with poser artists, but I'm clueless!

agiel ( ) posted Fri, 24 June 2005 at 8:12 AM

Originally, props are accessories, like those used on the stage of a theater. In the Computer Graphics world, they refer to just about any 3D object imported into a scene.

Merci Agiel.

I had to update the scene because of some issues with the edges of the glass. I also increased the default smoothness of the tablecloth to make it look better. Please download the scene again. I will upload the glass asa separate object this weekend.

Great atmosphere ! I really like the table cloth and the writing on the pencil is a nice touch. That reminds me I did not post my final version in this thread yet, so here it is... I am really pleased by the turnout of this first workshop. Let's hope the next ones will be as successful :)
