Subject: Z-Brush and Poser?

Does anyone have any experience using Z-Brush and Poser? How would you rate this program? Thanks Pinto

Z-Brush version 1.13 just came out. This is the first version that imports/exports obj file, hence, the first version you can use to create morph targets. Unfortunately, the Z-Brush online documentation is several versions behind, so everyone's pretty much on their own as to figuring out how to interface the two programs. Me? I'm on complete overload! The Poser Pro Pack, Truespace 5, 3D Exploration 1.16, and Z-Brush 1.13 all coming out at the same time! It's going to take 6 months or more till I get them all figured out! :) -SMT

As for your question...Z brush has great potential to make morphing easy and also to be THE program in which to paint your poser figures. IT can succeed where programs like Painter 3D and Amorphium have failed, BUT it has a completely unique user interface, and it's not easy to find your way around without help. so...I would say: Great program, steep learning curve. -SMT

Having tried numerous apps for the purposes of morphing - each one had its own learning curve to varying degrees of difficulty/results. ZBrush makes morphing so easy - no need to re-size or adjust or run the OBJ. through other programs to correct the deficiency. Also you can try your hand at sculpting heads etc. and texturing in ZBrush and then importing into Poser as OBJ. file. The results can be amazing. On a scale of 10 I,d give ZBrush 9.75 There are many more features to come soon including exporting of specularity and bump maps. When these features are implemented this will be one killer app. No need for Deep Paint 3d or BodyPaint 3D. Regards

[[venting 3D frustrations]] Not to be a killjoy, but perhaps i didn't get the drift with the Z-brush i downloaded. i followed the tutorials, but they pretty much were useless, since they taught me how to twist spheres into blobs. The demo version wouldn't let me save, and there is only so much use for twisted blobs. The interface was weird, if not bizarre. (But then, i find my copy of RayDream 5.5 also to be amazingly frustrating and annoying.) How would you do anything at all accurately in this app? Arrrrgh.

Anytime a company comes out with a unique GUI, I wonder why they think they must re-invent the wheel. Anyway, I think that the program is only a couple of steps away from being everything anybody could want, but few people will be able to figure it out until the documentation is improved. What the program can do: 1. Work like a traditional 2D paint program (Photoshop or Photopaint) 2. Work like a 3D paint program (Deep Paint 3D or Painter 3D) 3. Work like an organic modeler (Amorphium or Oragnica) 4. Render like a 3D apllication (take your pick) Part of the lack of documentation is that the creators of Zbrush didn't invision all the possible uses for it. They simply wanted to turn blobs into pictures :) -SMT

Smallspace, i get your drift. Documentation is key. i actually DID RTFM, and it didn't help. [[complaining loudly so the Zbrush people will drift by and get a clue]]. Working for a software house as i do, i can understand, in a way. Version 1: big hurry to get to market. My own company didn't have good docs until version 3.7, and still i ended up writing a 170-page encyclopedia for the chart definition language on my own initiative. Why didn't they do it earlier? Dunno. Documentation will be a poor step child until they run out of venture capital and start having to live by their sales. Yep, Z-brush could be good!.
