Subject: Rendered backgrounds in custom pose sets

This is a simple problem (I think) but I can't seem to find the answer. I've been creating my own pose sets (in Poser 5) and want to include a rendered thumbnail, rather than the boring unrendered view that appears. Back when I was using Poser 4 I remember solving this problem by rendering my scene, importing the image as a background, and moving my figure out of the way so that when the thumbnail is generated it captures the rendered background. When I try that now all I get is a blank thumbnail - the rendered background is not appearing. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance...

are you saving the image as a png?

Poser 5 doesn't handle backgrounds in the same way. Your best bet is to export the image as a .png and then change anything in Photoshop or PSP that you like, then just save out as a .png. If you need to make .rsr files (for compatibility with P4), you can use P3Do Explorer (attached link) to generate these from the .pngs.

In Poser 4, I always could import a background of any type (bmp, jpg, etc.) and then when I added it to my library it would automatically generate a thumbnail based on what was visible on screen, creating a PNG thumbnail. Now it doesn't work. I get an unrendered/untextured thumbnail of what's on my screen, and since it's not adding the rendered, imported background I can't use that trick. And yes, I tried to export the image as a png, but the png itself is still the unrendered version...

No, you need to render the image and then save it out as a .png file, not export the working view. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

johann99 - the reason your experience is different from Poser 4 is that Poser 4 used .rsr files for its thumbnails, which didn;t have the transparent background layer that .png files have - and Poser 5 & 6 uses .png files for its thumbnails.

Ah well, I guess I'll need to take the extra step in photoshop. I like P5 so far but this is one "feature" I could do without... :) Thanks all!

Yeah - the transparent background layer for .pngs is very useful when doing a render, but not so useful for saving a figure/prop/pose back into the library

Johan99, I think I detect a slight touch of irony in your discription of this as a "feature". Unfortunatly it is a delibrate feateure. If you save to a 'Lights' or 'Camera' pallet the background will be included in the thumb. Here is the procedure I use to get an image with background into a P5 pose thumbnail. Save your pose to the library pallet. Set a UI Dot. Set the docuiment window size to 91x91 pixels. Render image. Do; File > Export > Image, navigate to the appropriate pose folder, set the 'Save As Type' to 'PGN', and replace the existing png with the new image. Click the UI Dot you saved to restore the window to its previous size. In this procedure it is not usually necessary to paste into the background and move the camera, as you are saving a rendered iamge, however you can do it that way if needed. Although the standard size for a P5 thumb is 91x91 you can actually use any width up to the width of the pallet and any hight you like for the thumb.
