Subject: so new I squeek!

mae_wee ( ) posted Mon, 18 July 2005 at 8:34 AM · edited Sun, 04 August 2024 at 7:19 PM

Hi,
I'm new to the Poser 6.0 program but I have already seen (and grabbed) some freebies to use with it. I have some objects and a couple of figures with all their poses/faces etc. I have them in a zip file and I don't know where to put them after I unzip them.
Is there a tutorial available somewhere to help you put files in the right places in the program?
There is so much Content available, free and otherwise, but it won't do me any good if I put it in the wrong place!
Thanks for you help. :-)
Mae

Click on the "Poser Forum FAQ" link at the top of this page. It explains everything.

Generally, files are zipped so that if you unzip them to your Poser folder with "use folder names" checked, everything will fall in the right place. Some freebies and older files don't follow this convention, though, so look at the file in WinZip before you extract it, and make sure the pathname starts with "runtime."

Thank you very much. I thought I had checked the FAQ's...must be old age setting in. :-)

It's like a crossword puzzle; it's 'item x for character y', or 'texture z for m's [insert name here] clothing', etc. The two have to match (mostly). You can squeak by with hair, hats, and sometimes boots, but everything else needs major tweaking before it fits.
Find out what characters you have (Jesse and James, I do believe, for P6..;), and look for things that fit. Check out Content paradise, there's good freebies and spendies there. DAZ 3d, of course, Runtime DNA, and a couple (well, several) hundred other sites as well..have fun.

Thanks! It all looks so intimidating at first, but I know I'll love the program! Mae

If the files have been zipped correctly they should slot into the right places without any further ado. One thing to look for is the inclusion of "Runtime" in the path name, or worse yet, the Creator's name, like so: SamTherapy/Poses/MyStupidPoses If this happens - and it does, even with bought products and it's supposed to be a big no-no with bought stuff, unzip the file to your desktop, then rezip the resultant folder. That should make everything slot into place. Further info - forget (for the moment) if the thing is a piece of hair, clothing, a sex aid, television, cat, dog or whatever and take a look at the file extension. Here's what goes where: obj = Geometries folder jpg/tif/ = Textures folder cr2 = Character folder pz2 = Pose folder hd2 = Hand folder cm2 = Camera folder lt2 = Light folder mt2 = Materials folder pp2 = Props folder fc2 = Face folder Since you're lucky enough to have P6, you can create subfolders within each category and therefore group stuff in meaningful sections. For example, in Pose (which usually gets real full real fast), I have a folder named V3, for Victoria 3. In there I have several subfolders: V3 Characters, V3 Clothes MATS, V3 Poses. You can organize your stuff how you like, provided you don't put things in the wrong main folder. Well, actually, you can put poses in Hand, Camera and Face, but that's another story. Have a lot of fun and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Attached Link: The Poser File Disposition Guide

mae_wee, welcome to Poser. The most definitive tutorial I know of on where files go in Poser is English Bob's "The Poser File Disposition Guide" (see link above).

Thank you for the warm welcome. After checking out your link, I can see that the Disposition Guide is going to be a huge help to me. I think I'm gonna like it here. :-) Mae

Welcome :) I consider myself still new to poser even though it's been a year. I'm at the new but don't squeek stage! LOL Everyone here is great. Sometimes I feel so slow to grasp onto things but those who post in response to my questions show great patience, hehe

I don't know if this tip is helpful or confusing (if it's confusing just forget a bout it, please). After working with my first Poser Version and collecting as much freestuff as I could grab I realized that my runtime looked like it would explode soon - so many folders... After I got used to the "what to drop where"-things (don't alter paths of geometries and textures, put a pose in any Folder in the Pose librarie you like etc.) I built myself sort of a "poser dummy", with an empty runtime and unzip everything there first. After this is done I sort things manually by first dropping all things that require their exact path (Geometries, textures, Delta-Injectors and so on) where they belong to and than sorting the rest the way I like into cutom folders like SamTherapy described them better that I'm able to ;o) But I recommend too, that you first get used to the "what belongs where and what should not be altered" before you do anything manually, because I still remember the day when I messed up the whole texture folder... and the days I spent reinstalling.

I'm not always right, but my mistakes are more interesting!

I know what you mean...I have Photoshop CS and it took me a while to figure out where to put the Plug-ins, brushes, actions etc. that I downloaded from the www. I'm not rushing things, I don't want to make the mistakes you speak of. All of the stuff I have collected for Poser are still in their zip files in a folder I call 'Poser' (how original, huh? ;-) waiting for the right time to be installed in the program. By the way, I made a CD of that folder so that if my computer crashes or I buy a new one, I'll have all that original content ready to go again. (My PC has been known to go on strike from time to time!) Thanks, good advice. Mae

Making a backup of the collected files is clever and may prevent you from a nervous breakdown. Off of that you can easily refer to the included readme-files. Lots of tem are just named "readme.txt" and will overwrite older files when being unzipped. In fact I should make a copy of my actual runtime, too, but it's a bit too large for burning it to CD... seems I'm a messy, I can't throw away anything ;o) I decided to have a copy of poser on my server for easy restoring things if needed.
