THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce benchmarking on a AMD X2 4800

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Tue, 19 July 2005 at 10:46 AM · edited Fri, 13 December 2024 at 9:52 AM

Are there any standard scenes out there for benchmarking Bryces rendering speeds? I have a X2 coming in this afternoon and I'd like to do a comparsion of my existing processor which is a FX-53 and this new one. Kind of curious how much difference there well be. Thanks for your help in this.

Man thats some overkill you got there:)

In the forum we've used a file called abc wenger to do some benchmarking before, would be interested to see how you do.

Toolset: Blender, GIMP, Indigo Render, LuxRender, TopMod, Knotplot, Ivy Gen, Plant Studio.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Tue, 19 July 2005 at 12:03 PM

Cool, I'll use that file then and do one before I install the X2 tonight and then one after it's installed. Got one complex scene that I've been trying to get done that is simply a monster. It's been taking a week in the fast preview mode just to render 25%. I'll post up the results for you to look at if you're interested here.

Gog ( ) posted Tue, 19 July 2005 at 3:49 PM

Yes please post, don't forget if you are running 5.5 you may get a difference in render speed after the first time you've saved the file.

Darn, went to download that scene file but the web site appears to be broken right now. It up anywhere else?

Ok, found this other becnhmark file in another thread on here. Here are my settings before running the render on my current FX-53 CPU. RAM is 2 gigs of Corsair, timings are 2-2-2-5.

Here's the result of the rendering on my current FX-53 processor.

Doesn't look like Bryce takes avantage of dual processors as of yet. DOn't know why i forgot that. However, you can run two Bryces rendering and teh same time. Currently running a bench to see what the times are. Got 6:45 with the same scene file.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Tue, 19 July 2005 at 6:30 PM

Ok, getting 6:53 and 6:54 running the same scene in two bryce programs at the same time. And two are not tapping everything, even though it's showing 100% cpu useage.

hmmm most odd I get 6:50 on an xp 2400, gig of ram.that dont sound rite at all.Does it?You should be getting a lot lower time than 6:47 should'nt you?

"Reinstall Windows" is NOT a troubleshooting step.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Wed, 20 July 2005 at 12:17 AM

Well, it's only using one CPU looks like. I can render the same scene twice at the same time and get both rendered at the same time at very close to the same times. So it basically looks like it's not multithreaded yet. Hopefully version six well be.

MallenLane ( ) posted Wed, 20 July 2005 at 1:15 AM

The renderer is not multithreaded no. It would require a change in the rendering method, because only renderers that can render 2 areas of a single image simulaneously can take advantage of multiple processors at a nearly linear progression of speed. i.e it would need to be able to break the iamge into sections or tiles, and then launch seperate threads to render two or more of those sectionstiles on seperate processors at the same time.

Sans.. there you go! http://www.alexpensotti.com/brycebench.html I got 7.34 on mine! Which compared to the other times on the list,on the site, isn't too bad! John.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Wed, 20 July 2005 at 6:52 AM

I am hoping to go for one of these in a couple of months. Running truly independant bryces (or bryce and something else) will be handy. Cinema is fully multithreaded and with the new FinalRender-2 for C4D this will rock. (kid in a candy store grin!)

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Yes, I would think so. Does C4D have any benchmarking stuff to test CPUS with. I seem to remember reading something about it somewhere. How do you like Cinema?

Sorry for takinng so long to get back here, Cinebench is the benchmarking app and it can be downloaded from Maxon's site for free. It covers raw CPU, software and hardware OpGL accelaerations and handle multi-thread/processor.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 6:29 PM

Funny you should mention that. It's exactly what I was looking for. Downloaded it and ran it. Posted the results in a new thread called AMD 64 X2 Benchmark up above this one. The two cores increse the speed of the render by 184% compared to a one core or one processor render.

Sans2012 ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 7:04 PM

? Why is mine faster than your X2 CorwinRathe ?

I never intended to make art.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 7:11 PM

Not sure on that one Sans2012. It clocked a whole two seconds faster then my FX-53. Dual cores are going to show a big increase in speed in single threaded apps over a normal processor. It's roughly from what I can tell about as fast as my FX-53 on single threaded applications. Now when you really notice the difference is when you fire up two Bryce programs at the same time and render or render and run another application that is CPU intensive you can do it with no system locking up or slowing down dramatically.

Sans2012 ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 7:24 PM

I'll have to try it again with two. Often I run two Bryce apps rendering at the same time, while I'm using PShop/Wings and winamp in the background:] What mhz is the FX-53 running @?

I never intended to make art.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 7:37 PM

It's running at 2.4. Which is what the dual cores on the AMD X2 run at as well.

Sans2012 ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 7:41 PM

I'll be back in a few hours with some more results, have to pop out for a bit:) My render report seems to vary from yours???I'll post a screen shot too. Later:]

Ok heres my effort. I just opened in bryce 5.5b and rendered. But why has mine rendered less pixels but done way more calculations per pixel than the others shown here? Athlon 64 3200 Asus A8N-SLI MoBo 1 GB Cosair XMS PC 3200 Win XP Pro Sp2

Might be your version. I think I have Bryce 5.5c.
