Subject: Poll: How big an image can you see in your browser?

...without having to scroll, that is. I'm trying to see how large a gallery image most people can see without resorting to the mouse wheel. My monitor res is 1280 x 1024, and I can see a 1080 x 860 image (I use only two toolbars in Internet Explorer). Thanks for your response.

Yep, I can see it with room to spare. My monitor is a 19" CRT set to 1600 x 1200.

1280 x 1024 is a weird aspect ratio. 1280 x 960 would be more the standard size, 4:3, that is.

if i start at the top left corner in top of screen i can see just to the left of the 860 and to the top bit of the bottom triangle of the arrow. scrolling down don't bother me but i find scrolling left and right annoying

Francemi ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 7:12 PM

When I open the page, I don't see it at all. If I scroll down to see the top of the figure, I see about 2/3 down. I have to scroll right to see the right side. I'd say I see about the 2/3 that way too. Of course there is a menu on the left that is a little larger than the part on the right side that I don't see. My monitor is 17" flat screen. Resolution: 1024x768.

I can see the lot and the Rendo side bar navigation as well, the 860 fits nicely in Firefox with roboform buttons across the bottom. 17" LCD @ 1280 x 1024 Exactly the same story on my 17" CRT set at same resolution

I can see an 800x600 picture without scrolling in my browser window. Although I have my screen res set to 1280x1024 I don't maximise my browser. I have several browser windows open at once which I flick between.

zulu9812 ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 7:22 PM

i can't see it all - then again, my net computer only has a 15" monitor

mrsparky ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 7:22 PM

17in. 1280 x 1024 screen res Dell CRT. IE 5.5 File menu, standard buttons and address bar. The width is fine, top/bottom is cropped. Unless you press F11 (full screen). But...many LCD's flat screens and laptops can only hit 1024x786. Up/down scroll is OK, bust left/right is annoying.

Yep, I can see the whole thing. I've got a 16" monitor (you measure diagonally, right?) with a screen resolution of 1600 X 1200.

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 7:40 PM

I can see the whole thing, but I've got a big monitor (19") and a high screen resolution (1200x1600). bonni

I can see the width, but not quite the height. I use 1280 x 960 on my 21" monitor, a lot of you guys must have better eyes than I do, running higher res on smaller monitors. ;-) As SamTherapy said, 1280 x 1024 is a non-square resolution, you shouldn't run those if you can help it. Items will change aspect when you rotate them in those resolutions.

FlyByNight ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 7:54 PM

I use an 800x600 windows screen and I hate these too big pictures. I cant see the right hand side without scrolling sideways.

fls13 ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 8:01 PM

I've kept an eye on my own site stats, and most people have the 1024x768 screen res, so I size my images accordingly.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 8:19 PM

Wretched 17" CRT monitor at 1024x768, here. Too much flicker if I push it any higher.

shedofjoy ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 8:23 PM

I too have a 19" Crt running 1280x1024 with only 2 toolbars on Explorer, and a hidden task bar and i see things clearly with no scrolling and a little bit of extra screen fluff thrown in for measure. As for the Non Square res, can't say i have noticed that rotated images look any different... only if i have it as "Fit to screen" and why the hell do i want to do that???? also some like ODF are running resolutions of 1600x 1200.... jeese how close do you have to sit to see the text??? i have trouble with 1280x1024 (although i did up the res 2 months ago from 1024x798)..

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

Acadia ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 8:44 PM

Nope. I can't see the whole thing without scrolling. I don't know what the maximum size image that I can see is. I don't know how to figure that out. I am on my desktop which has a 17" monitor and my screen area is set to 1024x768 if that helps.

yes, I can JUST see it both height and width. 17" LCD @ 1280 x 1024

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 26 July 2005 at 9:37 PM

also some like ODF are running resolutions of 1600x 1200.... jeese how close do you have to sit to see the text? Firefox allows you to size up text on the fly if a site uses text that's too small (normally I only have a problem if it's small AND low contrast). As for the actual desktop, I just set the font bigger, but it does help to have a 19" Trinitron monitor :-) bonni

Firefox allows you to size up text on the fly< Yes, this is a good thing to know, whatever browswer you use. In Internet Explorer, hold down the Ctrl key and roll the mouse button to change text size. Not every site responds, but its very handy.

I have to scroll, but it fits on my screen if I do. (19" CRT, Firefox, set to 1162x864, so I can sit back about 2-3 feet from the screen and still read it.)

FWIW, I usually try to limit image width to 800 here.

I can see up to approximately 2000x1450 with the browser maximized. Do you actually maximize your browser, though? I find that most folks with a high screen res don't, because it's more workflow friendly to have multiple windows that you can move back and forth between. And beside, many websites absolutely spew their text content to unreadable lengths when you try to read them at high res full screen. bonni

aeilkema ( ) posted Wed, 27 July 2005 at 2:06 AM

No, need to scroll'down and sideways. 17inch monitor with 1024x768 resolution, which most people do seem to have, so the majority can't see it. I can go up to 2048x1536, but that would render every text unreadable. If I go any higher then 1024x768, it's just not pleasant working naymore on a 17inch screen.

My LCD is 1280 x 1024 - it's a common size for LCDs, even though the aspect ratio is different from most other standard video sizes. I can see all but the top and bottom borders with a maximised browser. If I was willing to shell out for the non-advertising supported version of Opera, I could see it all; but that won't happen until it crashes less often. :)

No. Have to scroll right/left. 15" monitor.

I never bother with threads that I have to scroll sideways. edited to say, " unless it an image of settings and tutorials."

22" CRT, 1600x1200 at 85Hz. Easy to read and lots of space. I never maximise a browser, I usually have 3 or 4 or 5 going at the same time and hop between them. :] Fish

Yup. Fits exactely, with room for the Rosity nav bar on the right. 17" lcd, 1280x1024. Using firefox I can easily maximize the browser and still jump around between more windows, I just chose another tab ;o)

" I aught to mention that I have no problems reading this text at 1280 x 960 on my 21" monitor, my main problem is with Poser. I have to actually read what I name the dials when I set up new stuff, my current resolution is marginal for that. I have no problems with it in Max or any other program. Be nice if Poser at least let you change background / text colors so you could get better contrast on the text. I've seen it mentioned that Kia Frause designed the original Poser interface, in that case, Curse you, Kia! ;-)

I can see it all since I'm running 1600x1200 on a 20" monitor, but I had to maximize the browser. Normally I don't run w/ it maximized, but for a good image I will. (I usually browse gallerys via "Open in New Window", so after maximizing, I just close it.) As for not being able to read, I can read most stuff just fine, because I've set the system for larger fonts. Some programs & web sites, however, don't respect the user's font size, so it gets rough. Trying to make out an 8 or 10 point font here is a definite "lean-in" moment.

Some programs & web sites, however, don't respect the user's font size, so it gets rough.

You can force them to (Accessibility in IE, the TextZoom extension in Firefox). But that can screw up the formatting at many sites. For example, if I set the text size so it's comfortable to read at DAZ, I can't use the pull-down menus, because they don't "line up" any more. Some sites aren't readable at all if your text is too large. The words end up on top of each other. :-P
