Subject: OT - Hey, why didn't they base her on V3?

If one of these realistic female androids was in my home, I don't believe that I would be able to sleep at night. I saw too many episodes of the Twilight Zone/Night Gallery as a kid -- episodes that dealt with just such a creature.

Frankly, this thing gives me the creeps.

I don't think they look that bad at all, As if V3 is that good. I'm glad they didn't base it on v3, this modeler has some talent of his own.

Have you ever seen Real Dolls? They're scarily realistic looking "love dolls". I can't give a link here becuse the site is age restricted but anyone who's curious can find the site by doing a Google search. bonni

What I thought was really cute is that the replicant was wearing a lavelier microphone. Just like any real interview subject!

Casette ( ) posted Thu, 28 July 2005 at 2:05 AM

Scary... Bonni, I know the site. Really I watch these dolls and I think on "Alfred Hitchcock present" and an episode with living mannequins... Agree with Xeno, a doll like this enter in my home and I flee...

In some ways, this is the easy side of the problem. And it's almost an experiment on the humans involved. How do we recognise anything as human? With something like this, you could compare different people and their body language without the complications of different faces. As long as the Nestene Consciousness doesn't move in on Osaka....

Agree with Xeno, a doll like this enter in my home and I flee... And yet some people want to have sex with them (well with Real Dolls, anyway). ;-) By the way, the name "female android" bugs me. "Android" means, specifically, "manlike", as "andros" is the root word for "man". This thing is more properly called a "gynoid". Geek? Moi? bonni

Intersesting link :-)

As is the RSS feed on that page...! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4713323.stm

"Ancient phallus unearthed in cave"

That article has the following quote:

"Female representations with highly accentuated sexual attributes are very well documented at many sites, but male representations are very, very rare," explained Professor Conard.

Sounds like Rosity site to me..!

I just find myself wondering about some of the other details. The object had been broken into 14 pieces and showed signs of having been used for flint knapping. Now, why would somebody do that?

ziggie ( ) posted Thu, 28 July 2005 at 3:12 AM

I guess in an emergency requiring a sharp weapon... eg: approach of sabre toothed tiger.. any 'tool' will do..! Or maybe it's user's hubby came home early from a mammoth hunt, found her using it and got jealous.

Wait a minute. It's only 4 inches long (which the reporter telling refers to as "lifesize"). It can't be a phallus! Maybe it's a prehistoric Ball Park frank. M

DrunkMonkey ( ) posted Thu, 28 July 2005 at 8:28 AM

Well you have to remember people were smaller then. The average height in the middle ages IIRC was around 5' whereas now it's about 5'-10".

elizabyte ( ) posted Thu, 28 July 2005 at 8:35 AM

The average human penis now is around 5.5", so 4" isn't all that much smaller, and given that the people in prehistoric times were certainly much smaller, it seems to me that 4" on a very small man would have been a very large penis, indeed! :-) bonni

hmm..yeah..maybe they can call her #6..Number 6... (waitaminnit, what is this with #6? The Cylon 'babe', the tripping the Rift 'babe', and Patrick McGoohan[sp?]..coincidence? I don't think so!..;)
Actually, it turns out the Midieval people were shorter than Roman-era Britons, who were closer to the present size. They've done archaeological studies (and this thread has way too many complicated dipthongs (and bad spelling)for my taste..;)

so... Ug is sitting in his cave, thinking... 'if the missus can have a toy to play with while I am out hunting... then sure as hell I can have one for when she is out fruit gathering!' so... he found himself a nice rock and drilled a hole in the middle of it. Trouble is... it rolled down the mountainside and... the wheel was born...

Actually the pics are of a real woman and very misleading. She is wearing some type of motion control gloves and head piece. They lead you to believe she is the android.

She looked like a real woman. As for those love dolls, eeewwww that would be like intimacy with well...quite frankly someone not alive if you know what I mean...at any rate ewwwww creepy creepy if I dated someone who had one of those in his closet I'd be running screaming for the door in a hell of a hurry anyway lol. But hey who the heck am I? To each his own pleasures I suppose.

Actually the average heigth of the Cro Magnon people were around 180 cm which is the same as in today's northern European population. Later in history, people got smaller, around 1900 they were tiny, for a large part due to malnutrition (industrial revolution and all that...) But PREhistoric man was quite tall. Even Homo Erectus (or Homo Ergaster as it's also referred to) was tall, the Turkana Boy was estimated to a heigth of 185 cm (6'1") - he was around 9-12 years old when he died and at that age he had a heigth of 165 cm (5'3") ok so paleonthology is one of my hobbies... I'll shut up now...

Anton, I don't think so. The article mentions nothing about motion capture (aside from programming, not real-time). Also, if you save the pictures to your computer and zoom in on them, you can see that while the robot is very realistic, it is not totally "real"-looking. To me, "she" looks more like a realistic mannequin or wax dummy than a real person.

Anton, I've seen a video of her moving, she's a robot. Either that or a cyborg, since in the video they take part of her skin off. :) They are using motion capture of a man's gestures to refine her movement, which is jerky at the moment. Here's a link to the video for anyone who wants it. She comes off as very fake to me, even with the silicon for skin, it's all in the way she moves her eyes and mouth.
