Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 14 9:14 am)
Hmmm are you talking about in your neighborhood or in the World? I have over 2000+ users on my site, MalePoserotica, and most actually do Poser artwork, and use it, and buy content. The question is, are you talking about LEGAL users of Poser, and also not including those who have "found" Poser elsewhere? then the number will be lower, however, if you are looking for the realistic numbers you must take into account the people who use Poser and Content both legally and illegally at the same time. (No I don't condone illegal use of Poser or Content, however, it does exist). Alot of Poser users don't post their work on these sites either. I don't post the majority of my Poser artwork on sites, as I illustrate books, and those images are under my copyright, and I don't put them on the Net. I am sure others do more with Poser that you do not see. Many Forensic folks (and Attorneys) use Poser to recreate crime scenes, and that stuff is normally never shown online. Greetings, Antonio

Legal ones of course, worldwide. There must be a lots of them then. Not to many in my neighbourhood though, I live in a sleepy old time, which is great if you want to get lots of work done, but otherwise.....

There used to be a map of poser users, but I've lost the link. You could log on and add your 'spot' as a poser user. Maybe someone knows where it is. I reckon 2000-3000 is very low. At a wild guess, I'd say easily over 10,000 and probably quite a bit more. There are probably 2-3000 merchants, never mind plain vanilla users, and they have to sell to somebody. Maybe there's only one person out there buying multiple copies of everything in sight. LOL. mac
I use Poser every day but don't often post my images on line 'cos a lot of it is for comissions and for posters that I sell in my partners shop. There must be several thousand Poser users worldwide who use and buy content when you think about all the merchants who seem to be doing pretty well with sales. Catlin
I really must have under-estimated the total of poser users worldwide.

I'm sure there are a great number of people who use Poser that don't post on sites. So going by number of posters on each site would be deceiving.

Hmmm. Maybe I was dreaming it, but I seem to recall a while back, someone "in the know" saying that CL had sold around 65,000 copies of P5 (which was their best selling version at the time)? Again, maybe my memory isn't serving me well, or maybe I was dreaming it, but that's what I seem to remember. So, assuming for a moment that number is even remotely accurate, then you can imagine that about 20-40% of the consumers are actual regular users. Perhaps it's more, perhaps it's less, but if you include the people who get it illegally, then it's probably an another 20-30% user base in addition to the legit users. Then there's those who still use P4/PP or P3 even. I would be tempted to guess there's at least 20,000 to 40,000 people who use the product commercially or as a hobby, and that number will likely grow exponentially as more P6 users get on board. Efrontier seems to be more aggressive with their advertising than the previous owners were.

2,000 to 3,000 has got to be an extremely low ball figure. Curious Lab's "Shade", which was not a good seller in the English speaking world, had sold over 200,000 copies. I'd guess Poser has got to be ten times that. Of course some people purchased, and stop using it for one reason or another. I'd guess that maybe one in 1000 users of Poser have ever posted anything to any Renderosity forum.
In contrast, I read an article not too long ago that claimed Discreet has over 100,000 units of 3dsmax distributed through licensing agreements. I'm not sure what version of the product that was, but if you can imagine the profit:
100,000 x $3,000 = $300,000,000
Damn, that's a lot of zero's. I'd bet that there's a larger percentage of actual users too (as opposed to Poser), because if you are dishing out that kind of loot for an app, then you are probably more likely to use it... often.

Highly unlikely, if you consider that some of the best selling video games for popular consoles like PS2 sell about 4 million copies. That would put Poser in with some of the best selling software titles of all time, and I seriously don't think it's in that range, because CL would still own it if it were that profitable. ;-)

There are over 200,000 registered users at the DAZ forums. You would suspect a great many of them are using Poser routinely, considering the initial draw is Poser content ...

I don't think you can judge by the number of forum users at all. So many of the users that sign up there (or any forum) can have duplicate accounts, or just be lookie-loos. Also, Daz sells products like Lightwave, Bryce, and their free Daz|Studio product now too. Message edited on: 07/31/2005 20:47

Well Rendo should be able to give an indication, based on the number of unique users who purchased Poser products in the last 3 months. Take that number and multiply by a fudge factor (somewhere between 2 and 10) and you'd have the answer. My guess is that it's well over 50,000.

I assume most Poser users use it as an add-on to other 3D/2D imaging apps...Allmost all the Poser users I know use it only when they need a human figure in their workand don't want to buy stock photography. They just Poser and keep it in case they need it... The situation is different for me. I am a dedicated Poser user. Poser is my main act...(and sometimes I use Photoshop for postwork). I wonder how many people are like me and use Poser as their main app?
My guess would be between 2000-3000.
I think that's way too low.
I suspect the number of people who buy content for Poser is much less than the number of people who use Poser. At least judging from the forensic animations I see on CourtTV, a lot of users get by with just the content that comes with Poser.
DAZ said in their last newsletter that 4,500 customers had qualified for vouchers in their DAZ Rewards Sale. I've heard that they sold 10,000 copies of some of their March Madness items (though I dunno if it's true). And probably a lot of users don't even know DAZ exists.
"....how many active Poser user there are, those that use Poser on a regular basis and also buy content for it?"<< About 5000 people who buy at least once per month.

Numbers are tricky. They can be manipulated and be misleading depending on what you are basing them on. Memberships and total accounts is that last thing you base anything on. It's like taking a yearsly census and not accounting for people that died.

Anyone have any idea of how many active Poser user there are, those that use Poser on a regular basis and also buy content for it? I've read some figures somewhere (like 2000, 4500, 7500, over 10,000). My guess would be between 2000-3000. I'm sure there are more Poser owners, but they don't do much with it and don't buy add-ons and content either.
