Subject: Depth of Field made EASY - with Poser 6

Well, this might be old news, but I just learned how to do this the other day. And since I reckon I'm not the only one who wasn't aware of this nifty new feature or P6, I thought I'd write a little tutorial and tell you all how *G* So if you want to know more about Depth of Field, look at my mini-tutorial at the link :o)

It's certainly easier than in Poser 5! Nice tutorial. You ought to submit it to DAZ, and get some bucks. Here's a pic I did using DOF a couple of weeks ago.

Casette ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 7:45 AM

Thanks, TG, I remember I saw a tut at DAZ3D about depth on field in Poser5, but the mess seemed a little difficult, and over all the nice writter said with happiness: "17 hours render"... and I thought: "BETTER ILL TRY IN A FUTURE LIFE" O_O

Thx TG, but to be honest, until yesterday, when I read a manual about DOF with the Python sript, this was the only way I knew in Poser but its a great Tut for the community.

I tried this out, too, (in Poser 6), but it takes forever to render :-(

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 8:27 AM

It takes a bit longer to render yes, but it all depends on how much blur you want. I had to give up making an example with fStop at 1,6 because it just got virtually nowhere. But the other pics were all rendered in a matter of minutes. Of course it all depends on the speed and power of your computer in general :o)

Any chance you can make that tutorial one page, or do a printable version? I usually save tutorials locally, can cannot with your DOF tut.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Nice little tut ernyoka1, I agree submit the tutorial. But I would submit it to eFrontier. DAZ couldn't care less about it Raven, they're trying to bury Poser with Daz Studio. -jay

"DAZ couldn't care less about it Raven, they're trying to bury Poser with Daz Studio. " ahhh yes...that is why they sent me the memo to stop developing my products for poser and make them only D/S compatible....now its all clear LOL j/k Nice tutorial though, I was just trying to figure that out last weekend....this should make it alot easier

almostfm ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 10:59 AM

One other nice thing with the new focus settings in 6--if you're doing an animation, you can now keyframe the focal distance (and the f-stop), so as your camera or character moves, you can keep them in focus (or go for one of those artsy shots where things don't move, but the focus on the lens changes.

Jay7347 ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 12:44 PM

Right Rawnrr...and that's why DAZ hasn't officially supported a version of Poser since P4PP. I know I may be a little over the top in my comment but I'll stand by the fact that DAZ is positioning themselves as content and Program for 3D figure software. As for a fine tutorial on Poser 6...why would DAZ want it? I was just trying to send her in the right direction to people who would appreciate her efforts. -jay

Well, it turns out there is already one at DAZ, but it uses the Poser 5 python script way, which compared to the P6 one is a bit of a chore. Not taking anything away from the tutorial at DAZ by aphoennix by the way, as that one is applicable to Poser 5.

Gareee, I've made a printable version now. My problem is that right now I can't get in contact with my webhotel, so I can't upload it. Whenever it's up it will be here: http://trekkiegrrrl.dk/DoFPrintable.htm (it's my ftp proggie gone wonky apparently. I can't connect to anything. And of course I'm in the middle of a large render - with DoF so I can't just reboot L)

Actually DAZ does encourage content to be compatable in all versions of poser. All my products this year (since P6 came out) have included a P6 version. Daz just wants content to be able to work in versions as far back as P4 (which may seem a bit limiting....but they want to be able to reach as broad of a market as possible). The only thing they havnt done is accept things which can only be used in p5 or p6 (so far)

Excellent Tut TG, I did have a utility to work the DOF out in P5 but this is better by far and something i didn't realise had been fixed... Thanx TG

The only thing they havnt done is accept things which can only be used in p5 or p6 (so far) Sure they have. They've got Tiny's dynamic fur for the MilCat, a set of dynamic dresses for the DAZ women, and some other P5-only products.

I love you. I worship the soil you tread on, and I am eternally grateful for this. It's a feature I've been itching to use for AGES, and now that finally my copy of P6 is starting to behave, I can use it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

xantor ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 10:50 AM

Shedofjoy, if you make the pixel samples number higher it will make the depth of field blurring more smooth (but it will take longer to render).

shedofjoy ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 4:34 PM

I thought about making the pixel samples higher, but i think 7 hours for that render was enough..lol.. (the water took up most of that) and Thankyou ernyoka1 for the tut.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 11:40 PM

I must be missing something because my imported background image doesn't seem to blur no matter what focal distance or FStop setting I use and yes, before you ask, I did check "Depth of Field" in the render settings. Does it have to be a background prop like the one sided square for this to work?

raven ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2005 at 10:55 AM

I would put the background on a prop, definately, as in theory, the imported background image isn't in the scene, but rather just an image the scene is being renedered over, hence no way to apply DOF to it.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2005 at 11:41 AM

I was afraid you were gonna say that. :/ Backgrounds applied to the one sided cloth always look washed out to me.

raven ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2005 at 12:59 PM

file_279180.jpg

Try applying the background to the Alternate Diffuse instead of the normal diffuse channel and see if that makes your backgrounds any better. Set the normal diffuse channel to zero when you do it. The image shows what I mean, normal diffuse on the left, alternate diffuse on the right. The only side effect of the alt diffuse is that the background wont receive shadows.

shedofjoy ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2005 at 5:35 PM

Now i never thought of that... Thanx raven, very usefull for the sky, and i like the idea it doesnt receive shadows...
