Subject: Strange disappearance of Celebrity characters by Gwendolyn

Talos ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2005 at 12:40 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 9:51 PM

Anyone know what happened? I got Jewel before it was too late, but now she's gone too! There was one I wanted that looked like Jennifer Lopez. But that and some others have been sucked into sudden oblivion. I'm despondent. I LOVE celbrity characters, and can't get enough of them. Are there lawsuits? I don't know how to contact Gwendolyn, or if I should even bother her.

There are some at Daz. Were the ones you are talking about in the MP here? Maybe she's moving them to another site?

Gwendolyn had some characters for sale here that weren't found at DAZ. Hmm, not only are the products gone, she's not listed in the pull up list of merchants. Guessing she decided to close her store here for whatever reason. You could try sending an IM; maybe she still logs in. Like Acadia said, it's possible some of these characters might surface at another store at some point. Maybe even at DAZ since she has a lot of stuff there?

Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are "look alikes", and could potentially result in trouble due to copyright? I know there is discussion from time to time in the copyright forum about the legality of celebrity look alikes even though they are named differently. That's just speculation on my part though, but it seems that Renderosity is cracking down in various areas, so perhaps the sale of "look alikes" is one of them?

Gwendolyn has joined the DAZ Team. You can read about it in the DAZ Newsletter (link attachted) - you have to scroll down to Special Announcement.

This all adds up. I noticed she was at Daz and not here. I don't know if saying this makes matters worse, but I also noticed Gillian Anderson, Lucy Liu, Tyra Banks, Jennifer Lopez, and Cameron Diaz were missing, but there was still a Brittny Spears and Uma Thurman. I was about to ask everybody where I could find a Kate Beckinsale lookalike. :-(

Thanks!

With luck some of her older stuff might show up as DAZ originals. I know this happened with some of Dark Whisper's odler stuff.

That's what I'm hoping for. I'm just waiting and crossing my fingers. She's the best at what she does.

Copyright laws can not have anything to do with it. Only God can claim copyright to persons appearance. In case of celebrities, you can even publish photographs you have taken of them without asking permission. Therefore, a 3D image that only looks like a celebrity can not cause any problems. I guess Gwendolyn has just done the same decision as many other artists: leave Renderosity because of the new TOS that attacks against artistic feedom and freedom of expression. For a merchant, it is even more important to leave Rosity, since more and more people are joining the boycot against merchants and products marketed at Rosity.

Pali, that is incorrect. Celebrities may trademark their likenesses and have a "Right of Publicity" in that they may state how their likeness is used. Otherwise you would find pictures of Pamela Anderson selling Viagra and Nancy Reagan advertising the Church of Satan... Karen Copyright Moderator

What has Rendo done with it's TOS that people find so objectionable?
