Subject: Vue 5 Inf and OpenGL question

svdl ( ) posted Fri, 29 July 2005 at 10:56 AM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 10:02 AM

I've got a Geforce6800LE graphics cardd in my main workstation - not a bad card, reasonably fast and pretty good OpenGL support. But the Vue windows are quite slow when refreshing, and it's pretty tough to do precision positioning. I've played with the drawing options, but nothing really helps. Even a scene containing only a standard untextured terrain isn't updated "live", neither in OpenGL view nor in wireframe view. The main system is pretty fast, Athlon64 3500+ Socket 939, 4 GB Dual Channel DDR400 and 2 10,000 RPM working disks. Is it worth shelling out big bucks for a fast nVidia Quadra card?

check your drivers conflicts with firewall/modem on the webpage, whats are you running XP pro Sp2...hope it helps R

WinXP Pro SP2, latest patches. WinXP firewall (behind a NAT router/firewall). Good point about the video driver, it seems to be rather old. Going to test the latest drivers from nVidia.

I have a Geforce 6800 GT, and OpenGL works fine. I really don't think you need a Quatro for Vue, unless it's just the excuse you needed!

An Nvidia 6800 is more than adequate.
I suspect it is EITHER your video/motherboard chipset drivers.
OR
It's a memory issue.
Vue eats memory like there is no tomorrow.

More than likely, it's the later.
Check the windows "task manager"(right click taskbar/task manager) while you're working. Select "Processes" tab. Click "mem usage" to sort running processes & see what program/s are eating your memory.
It's also a good idea to add the "VM Size" column to your task manager - click "view/select columns" & tick the "Virtual memory size" box.
You'll notice Vue eats a hell of a lot of "VM"(leaks!?).

Increasing the amount of physical memory (RAM) AND Virtual memory will increase your VUE performance.

So..Update your drivers & increase your "virtual memory" and see how that goes...let us know what happens?

Cheers.

Hm. Increasing the amount of physical RAM is not possible, it's already 4 GB. I've got over 10 GB of virtual memory, spread out over 3 disks (to increase speed). I know Vue is a very memory hungry program. Alas, it can't use more than 2 GB (I hope e-on will recompile using the /G switch, so it can use 4 GB on WinXP 64bit, and I also hope e-on will port Vue to 64 bit - 4 T of virtual memory, yummie!!!) Upgrading to the latest nVidia WHQL drivers did not help one whit. The mainboard drivers already were the latest ones.

Well...sounds like you have everything pretty well geared for speed & your ram is definately NOT an issue.
I have a 128mb 6600GT & 1.5gb Ram, however..my nVidia drivers are NOT WHQL.
I guess it all depends on your perspective & what YOU class as slow ie:"Vue windows are quite slow when refreshing, and it's pretty tough to do precision positioning".
Something tells me working on a machine like yours would be "WAY" quick for me.
Either way..it's sounds like something your going to have to learn to live with..unless e-on release an update that remedies the issue.
I hear Vue will be working with C4D soon & C4D has working 64 bit versions. It's already speedy on the 32 bit platform. I'd love to see how quick it(C4D) runs on a beasty 64 bit system.
