THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Semi-OT: Marketing Issues (Need Help from R'osity Merchants)

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, sorry if it's not. I just feel more comfortable here =) If there is another forum where you think I would get a better answer (didn't look like it to me) then please let me know. I have a set of textures I would like to try and sell, but I'm not sure that it's even worth it to try to sell them here at Renderosity. So I was wondering, how much money on average do you merchants make, exactly? Say, the first week or so? Thanks!

If there that good, your make millions!!! Other than that, I'm sorry i havent got a clue :(

Sorry. I hope I didn't come off as arrogant; what I meant was, should I try here first, or some other place. Am I likely to get good exposure here, or should I look elsewhere? ^_^

marcfx ( ) posted Sat, 06 August 2005 at 6:45 AM

I didnt think you came over as arrogant at all, you NEED to know which is the best way to make money after all said and done, that is why your selling your products. I would had thought that here would be first, as you said, it has more coverage. secondly, try Daz and thirdly, your website with lots of plugs!!.......... I hope you get the info your looking for as many of us (me)if we get better at modeling then we too will need this info in case we have goods to sell. I wish you luck in your venture.

Thanks very much. =) I'll try posting this in the Product Showcase forum as well, and if Clint doesn't like it, he can move me wherever he likes me. =)

as someone who uses the marketplace to buy and sell quite a lot, i can recommend putting them up here. it costs you nothing to set-up, and the exposure in the community is extensive. i would advise you do what i did, see what is there already, and base your price on that.(dont forget the cut they take here. its a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained, and i can heartlily recommend it, for the right products you could be pleasantly surprised with sales.

Experience is no substitute for blind faith.

As a new merchant you will only be allowed to upload three (3) products, until your sales reach $300.00, then you will be allowed to upload more products.... if the item is priced right, and in your case, the textures are highres and fully tilable you should have no problem reaching that amount, however, remember Renderosity takes 50% of the price just to use their servers and advertising.

There are times you may feel that your price is in keeping with the quality of your product but you don't make any sales, I think their cut has alot to do with some merchants giving up before they've had a chance to really get established. Another thing, POSER rules the marketplace, it is Poser oriented and so with an eye to that, pitch to the Poser consumer, to make your sales.

In the first couple of weeks, on average, unless it's an exceptional product, you may have no sales at all. There are 1876 merchants here, and that's alot of competion...your sales will also be based on marketplace identity, your advertising strategy, quality of the product, and price. There are poser merchants that make in the thousands every month, and then there are the rest of us that make a few hundred every month.

Thanks very much, Zhann. =)

Shucks, I'd be happy just to make a few hundred every month. I'm not really expecting much from this (actually I don't expect to even be accepted at all =P), but a bit of extra pocket change here and there can't hurt.

I'll try to set up the textures in Poser (I've already checked out a few of them in Poser, and they look just fine in my opinion), and also maybe in Bryce. All of them will hopefully include the original bmps to work with.

Thanks again and I'll look into it. =) Trouble is, I've never been very good at selling things (I'm too often apt to tell them everything wrong with them, so as to ensure that they are satisfied with their purchase =P). We'll just have to see how things pan out; hopefully the textures are good enough to just sell themselves.

Crikey Jan, No wonder the prices can be so high, 50% of your product. On your product just to break even could take years if your lucky! Best thing to do is to make something that is expensive and after you make the $300, make lots of small cheaper items to build on.

Just give it time and you'll do alright. What I'd do is sit down and create my marketplace identity first; - how do you want customers to know you? -do you want to be a company, studio, design firm, i.e. I'm know as Zhann and that's what I decided on for my Rosity identity, I also known as NightHawk Design Arts, and SweetDreams, Ltd. , and ZhannsArtWerX in other marketplaces. -decide on a look for your products, this will decidedly change over the course of your store...check out the products with 5stars, they usually have a definite 'look'.You will be using the advertising page when you become a merchant to upload banners, start sales etc. You also are required to have 3 large images with your product upload, make sure they are crisp, easy to read and show your product in it's best(and sometimes for Poser and lighting items, worse light) light. -Writing copy for your product is perhaps the toughest thing, think of what you'd like to know as a consumer about your product if you were buying it and list those things, also a little hype doesn't hurt, make your customer believe they can't live without your product. Be turthful and honest with flare...=) - Always have some friends test the product on their computers, MAC as well as PC, the testers in the marketplace are only there to do a last check, and you could get caught in the dreaded testing loop if the pacvkage you upload is not 100%. Once you have your promos, a thumb, the product zipped with readme and license, you're ready to upload!!! Any help you need feel free to ask me, I've been running 3 businesses since 1970.....

Thanks Zhann. My textures all already have a definite "look" about them, I'll think about other possible things to sell along the same lines. I had a really cool fighter that I lost when my computer crashed out; I was going to try to sell it on DAZ but never really got around to it. Hopefully things will pan out and thanks for the well-wishes and good advice. =)

Zhann ( ) posted Sat, 06 August 2005 at 4:11 PM

Not how the textures themselves look, but your store 'look', the way the advertising images look on your product pages, or how you present the product in image and text on the product page...i.e. do you want to put them on a promo page in a graphic form, or do you want to have them in a montage, or do you want a complete render as a promo page, do you have images in the galleries using these textures, do you want to use links to those in your advertising, do the product pages have borders, or is the product displayed on a tile image, is the promo page showing your textures organic in feel or technological? That type of thing, because it's all in the advertising....=)

Golly! I have answers to maybe half those questions. Okay, I confess... it's probably closer to a third. I can see that this is going to require a bit more forethought than I had originally anticipated. Hmm... Thanks ski, we'll see how it turns out. =)
