Subject: OT - Gender/Render question

SomethingWicked ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 7:25 AM ยท edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 3:22 AM

After seeing the recent thread concerning age, I began wondering about other demographics and how they relate to Poser, so I'd like to throw out a couple of questions to everyone. 1. Are you male or female? 2. What do you usually render, males, females, or animals/objects? BTW, I'm female and almost exclusively render female characters.

Another thing I began to wonder (naturally, AFTER I first asked the original questions!) was why you render what you do. Is it because of the abundance of clothing/hair/add ons for your characters, do you find one gender more appealing physically, or is it just easier to render something you know about on a personal level? I think that for me, I enjoy postworking female images better due to the fact that the clothing I paint is more fluid and graceful. There are a great many physically appealing men out there, but not many look good in a dress! ;)

originalkitten ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 8:10 AM

looks down all female here....and I render mainly female...I think it's cause I'm female and I can relate more to it. I know how things look and should be...lol I even do facial expressions in mirrors and copy them lol...Plus there is a lot more stuff available for females...including a lot of gothic/fairy/fantasy stuff I seem to like lol

StarDogSirius ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 10:03 AM

Female.

I render just about everything I can get my hands on. I do tend favor the males the most then animals/creatures. Why? Hmmm I guess because the men are not used nearly as often as the females. There is less to work with in the mens department (hair, clothing etc) so I find them much more challenging to work with.

Not to mention, I am mad at my girls right now as I have been reworking my Runtime and have found they have more (and nicer) clothes in their closet than I have in mine. They are such spoiled princesses! l

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 10:20 AM

Male. I render mostly male since that is what my illustrations call for. I just do what assignments I am given :)

zulu9812 ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 10:27 AM

I am male. I don't render commercially, just as a hobby, so I do whatever takes my fancy really. I almost never render females.

Byrdie ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 10:39 AM

I'm female and I render mostly males, mostly nekkid but sometimes in fantasy/sci-fi gear. Why? Well, I'm a pervy wizard/spaceknight fancier who digs slash (gay-themed art & stories). I would do Vicky in equally compromising positions and states of undress -- my traditional art days were devoted to fantasy females with swords and the occasional comic book character for variety's sake -- but everybody does Vicky and I've just got to be different.;-p

pakled ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 11:12 AM

Male..last I checked..;) Well, do female more because
Vickie/Maya/Project Human/Posette...yada yada

Mike/Dork/Adam- can't sing..can't act..can dance a little..;) (a paucity of stuff, alas..;)

Female. Renders mostly males (like Byrdie I'm a slash-loving wizard-lover ;o) ) currently I render mostly illustrations (often freely interpreted...) - and just as a hobby. I have all the female characters too though and if hard pressed, I'll render those. With clothes.

Female. Actually I love to render everything ...... but the last time most of my renders was just testing and not really artistic work using any of the human characters...... but well I used most Male because are most realistic looking... 70 % - Scene - props 20 % - Male 5- % female 5 %- Others Cath

I think I am male...checks Yeah, I am male... I render mostly naked household items. You should see this one render of a broom and mop, woohoo, racy! Actually though, I don't render nudes. Clothing makes such a difference, even skimpy clothing. I tend to do more females, since you can do so much with a woman, whereas, a man can only go so far. When I do a male render, it is some character from a fanstasy, or comic setting. For females, I have begun to do more pinup type renders.

  1. Male. At least, the last time I looked. 2) Male and female. Sometimes with added animals or monsters. Depends on what the story demands. Usually together in one render, though the females usually have the upper hand. Sometimes dressed, sometimes nude. And I strongly believe the female body is one of the most attractive and beautiful shapes in the universe.

A Red Neck Male. I love creating my own female characters. Nothing as beautiful as the curves of all shapes of women. Well, there is the very old/ancient architecture and a sweet unexpected note off my axe once in awhile.

Like ernyoka1, Byrdie, and Mec4D, I am one of the few females in Poserdom. I mostly build characters instead of doing renders. Infact, I have very few nice renders to show for all my hardwork. I work 90% of the time with the males (M3 is my favorite), and 90% of my renders are test renders of textures for characters, sets, hair, or clothes. The rest of my Poser time is split between silly play-posing the latest woman, critter, monster, anime or toon character, furry, or kid. I'll play pose them for about 30 minutes, then forgot about them, and get back to the "serious" work. ;) And I also read the forums and cruise the stores more often then I work in poser! LOL! bB

Male. Mostly render females. Somtimes male and female. Why? Females are nicer to look at (IMHO), but availability clothes, hair, etc, probably also has an influence.

FlyByNight ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 7:14 PM
  1. Female 2. Females, mainly, on the fantasy side because Frazetta did them so well. I do work with males, and dragons, fairly often. I'd probably use males more if there were as many outfits for them as there are for the females.

If the idea is to create some sort of hypothesis about the sex of the artist and the content of the art, I think you'll find a weak link at best. Many artists are influenced heavily by other art that they have seen and admired. Scantily clad or nude women have dominated the history of art. The sex of the artist doesn't change what other art is available as inspiration. I haven't counted up the responses here, but at quick glance, it looks like the numbers of men focusing on women and the number of women focusing on women are about the same.

SophiaDeer ( ) posted Thu, 11 August 2005 at 10:41 PM

I am female and do mostly female renders. I like to put clothing on them because for me it is more challenging to get the clothes to fit with the character body morphs, then to make the clothes look good when you pose the model. Don't ya just hate it when you put Victoria in a pair of jeans, have her sit down then her knee pops out? :-)

No, there's certainly nothing scientific going on here - I was just curious. I read yesterday about a British study that's about to be released regarding how men and women view webpages differently, and it just got me to wondering if men and women use Poser differently as well.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2005 at 8:14 AM

Male. Judging from my galleries and other renders -- females ~60%, males ~40%. And now that I've completed construction on my male version of Furrette, I expect that ratio to gradually equalise.
