I everyone , I'm using poser 5 & no mater what charactor I use & no matter what clothing I try to use ( this also includes program poser 5 presets), when I click the checkmark to apply them...The charactor dissappears. All you can se in the window is the clothing article. any one know what I am doing wrong?

your double clicking the check mark.....only click it 1x...that should be fine

poser 5 manual tells you to click the wrong button. at the bottom of the library pallette hover your mouse over the ticks. the 1 that says create new character is the 1 you want

O.K , now please don't get frustrated with me here but why is it that when you pose Don & Judy with the pre rendered clothing , the clothing conforms with the pose but if I start from scratch with a nude charactor & piece together the clothing , it is standing in the air while my nude charactor is in the pose un clothed?

Each clothing figure must be conformed to the nude character (Figure->Conform to...). It's all in the manual (though I admit that the manual is not very good...) It's usually a good idea to rename figures. When you load a figure using the double checkmark, it's usually called Figure 1, Figure 2 or so. Choose Object->Properties, then choose Body from the dropdown list on top of the properties window, and then choose the Properties tab. Now you can change the name to something useful (like Don or Judy for the characters, Pants, Skirt, Boots etc for the clothes). Makes keeping track of your scene much easier.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

To solve that: On the Command bar locate the Figure Command, click and the locate Conform to. Make sure you have the clothing selected first. Now, if it's a prop aka dynamic then you would have to use the cloth toom.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

Mikeywilliam - don't worry about people getting frustrated with you (or just ignore any occasional person who does!) Most of us here probably went through those exact same problems when we were newbies. This is one of the best places on the net to solve your poser problems.
