Have you shot pics at an aquarium? Generally the light is fine for many subjects. Focus can be a prob with my trifocals and manual focus. This is an autofocus using an old Minolta Dimage 100, compact and old but does a pretty good job. The view is just for fun. The distorted people are in the tunnel beneath the fish tanks, looking up at the sharks, other fishies and the folks above who are looking down. Yes, this is NOT a gallery image. It was fun anyway. I will not post the jellyfish shots..the lighing made these come out pretty well but all loooks postworked due to the ambient lighting. Strange stuff. The peole were stranger than the fish. TomDart. (cable is out, no tv..so this silly post)

I dont think it is silly. It looks neat! You should post more "off the hip" shots like this. Sometimes I get tired of all the postwork'd shots. Postwork'd shots sometime make me think of women with low self esteem who cake on makeup thinking it makes them look better when truthfully, it the opposite is achieved. Let the natural beauty show for a change. Postwork in moderation is ok and good, but at times some do too much. Thank you for sharing! Thomas OK, go ahead and flame me! LOL But show the jellyfish first!

ok, here are jellyfish...lol.

TomDart ( ) posted Tue, 16 August 2005 at 9:59 PM

Oh, Thomas, this is a left handed picture. (inside joke) Only postwork is crop...the aquarium light did the rest.

Beauty...the jellyfish turned out deadly. The one on top looks like a painting on someone's wall I did a job for and he paid 1800 dollars for it.

I thought the top down look expecially with the haze is rather cool. Perfect for the alien attack feature we all have been planning. Bsteph

Yep they are rather interesting Tom - something bit different, well worth the experiment :)

And every one said, 'If we only live,
We too will go to sea in a Sieve,---
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!'

Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a Sieve.

I think the jellyfish one is very cool! The first one is interesting, too. Lots to look at. Took me a minute to figure it ou. :) They are both very unique and a bit different. I like! :)

Yeah!!! I like the jelly fish. It looks like you got all of the tendrils into one frame. I know how hard that can be. Bsteph

Oh wow!! That jellyfish shot is a real stunner Tom!!! O_O

TMGraphics ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2005 at 6:11 PM

Now see, doesn't that feel better?! I really like the jellyfish! Um, sorry TEDZ, didnt mean to offend you, I will purchase you some more Guacamole Face Pack stuff if you'll change your mind! :p

TomDart ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2005 at 7:11 PM

Well, I can't even spell Auckland, Aucland, Aukland...but for Tedz, if I had seen you down there in the tunnel I would have jumped in and swam down...you could see the real me behind the glass. Long swim to your country, get off the moving track and wait. ; )

Hey Tom! Some cool aquarium shots! The jellyfish are awesome! I went to the one in Camden NJ last month with my daughters summer camp! We were on a strict schedule so it was SHOOT & RUN!!! Got some decent shots! The newest attaction was the 2 Hippos! Check the link for a collage of pix! (big file so just be aware!) L8r! Joe

TomDart ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2005 at 9:20 PM

Joe, the lower rt image with people in it, part of the collage...this reminds me of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Neat shots....focus can be tricky and lighting ranges from one end to the other. It is sort of like shooting fish in a barrel but not that easy overall to get a decent image. Thanks for the reply land the fun link. Tom.

Guess I am not the only one who went to the aquarium . Heres one from me . I think the one in front is a Rock Cod , the 2 in the back are Salmon.

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 18 August 2005 at 8:18 PM

Wow! The cod and salmon are really nice...it this a saltwater aquarium? I suppose it must be to have the cod. Whew...nice to see other pics from aquariums. This is a bit of fun and stuff I would not have normally posted. These are my other two jelly fish pics. All taken with the old Minolta Dimage 100, a compact camera which has served well. Thanks for the other pictures. Now, I wonder just how many Ripley's Aquariums are around the world. Tennessee in the USA has a nice aquarium in the city of Chattanooga. This "state" aquarium features a large freshwater exhibit of fishes in the Tennessee river from top to bottom, plus alot of saltwater creatures. A new building has been added and I have not seen the new addition. Personally, I prefer the educational ones to the "for profit" ones...seems in some ways the critters are treated more nicely..that is a different subject. Thanks to all who found this thread fun. I have!! TomDart

My images are from the Seattle Aquarium in downtown Seattle at the water front. I first went there as a small boy to see " SHAMU THE KILLER WHALE " The first Orca in captivity. They used to let you feed it little frys of some kind that they sold you a dozen for a nickle. Now its just a cool place to bring the children/grandkids to learn about local fish and sea life ( tide pool stuff ).

I love your Jelly fish images Tom. I have always loved jelly fish as long as I am not in the same water as them ( been stung a few dozen times ). They are like poetry in motion. I have seen some local Sushi places that have some killer saltwater tanks with only jelly fish in them that is almost worth the high cost of eating there.

Here is a image of Salmon frys that get released into the sound when bigger.

I live close to Sea World so I guess its time to go get some more images again some time soon.

I liked Seattle..several years have passed since we were there. Unfortunately, we missed the acquarium. Salmon are one of my favorite fish..both respected in life with their anadromous nature, the stuff you see in spawning in freshwater rivers... and respected as a magnificent food fish. Wonderful fish and something else to fish for! (I am a dumb fisherman who uses barbless hooks..) Thanks for the fry pic. This is truly neat. Tom. PS. A "man of war" floating jelly got me when I was about 12 years old. That was intense and totally painful. I was about 20 feet away from it but the stinging pods reached me. That one I will not forget. There were rows of stripes across my back from each nettle strike. I rolled on the beach a while then help came...still hurt a long while. Beatuiful but respected creatures are the jellyfish.

LoL , Yes you can forget many things in life but a man of war sting isnt one of them. I was told to stay away they sting. I was totaly mesmerised by 100's of them swiming by and was sure I didnt see anything resembling a stinger. I got to close and learned what real pain is. The liquid fire kind that makes you black out.

Same cod pissed off cause I was banging on the glass that says not to. Theres more salmon and a mud shark .

bsteph2069 ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 3:27 PM

I thought the man O War were the giant ( 3 feet across ) tendrils 20 feet long. Jelly fish. I think I have some bizzare fantasies of what a man O war looks like. Bsteph

TomDart ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 6:49 PM

The "Man of War" jellie has some sort of flotation thing at the top and can float at the surface. The very long threads of stinging nettles do extend a good 20 feet..or in my case I believe it was longer. I thought I was safe, seeing this floating thing at some distance. Then came the instant pain and I knew I was hit.
