Wow, look at the numbers we have here this morning! I don't think I've ever seen so many people logged on!!

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

Ha! I came to the forum to post this same observation... and see there's a thread already! So, what's the consensus, are these numbers relatively accurate? meaning, are they as accurate a gauge as usual? I thought I had seen someone point out that the online count was like 10,000 people or something wild.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 7:54 AM

Probably because people are getting tired of how damn slow this place is and that it's been way over a year this way. So, it's possible the count comes from people doing what I do...right-click and open messages and forums into a new window so that while you are reading one thread the others can be trying to open. I've had 10 windows at various stages of opening. Darned if I'm going to click on a thread and waste 2 minutes of my life waiting on this site.

xantor ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 7:59 AM

The more windows you have open, the slower the opening will be.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 8:03 AM

"The more windows you have open, the slower the opening will be." I find that I can get through the forums I read faster when other windows are working on appearing while I'm reading a thread rather than NOT being able to even start reading until the window appears. If things get much worse here, me and my extensive purchases will just give up and spend elsewhere. And, losing members that actually support the site is ALSO bad for getting this site to run faster.

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 8:25 AM

Yup, I keep multiple windows (or tabs) open, too. (Which is why I hate sites that disable right-clicking. I use it to open another window, not to steal art.)

Downloading two items at the same time is faster than downloading one after the other. There's even more of an advantage when you're reading forums or browsing the MP, because you can be reading one page while the others are downloading.

But do they really count me as ten people because I have ten tabs open to different threads, all at the same time?

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 8:27 AM

"But do they really count me as ten people because I have ten tabs open to different threads, all at the same time?" Not sure but sometimes, when I've look at the members on line, it shows some people 5 or 6 times. I just assumed it meant they had more than one window open.

rockets ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 8:35 AM

More than one window open is something I hadn't thought of to explain the numbers showing online. Since I posted my last set of numbers, I noticed that the count as dropped to under 2000...weird.

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 8:45 AM

Interesting.

But I've been using multiple Windows since I came to Rosity. I do it even on fast sites, I confess, and Rosity is anything but fast, even on its best days.

Could it be that the spread of Firefox, with its tabbed browsing, has encouraged more people to multitask this way?

Or maybe it's D|S, bringing in hordes of new users?

aeilkema ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 9:55 AM

Well it shows that many people are online, the site is very slooooooow at times.

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 11:43 AM

ah..already went by the 4400..;) a coupla years ago, we had 'inflated' numbers (the Poser forum once 'said' it had 40,000 posts..;) hit counts got up into 'big b**b' territory (an average pic count showed 2,000+..;), and in a day or so, it went back to normal. Wonder if this is more of the same..;)

Here's a tip Randym77. If you hold down Shift on the keyboard, and normal (left-click) a link in IE, it will spawn a new window. (This actually has the added bonus of making a link color show as "visited" if it is enabled to change color.) I don't know if other browsers work the same, but I am guessing that they do. Just figured it was a helpful tip to get around the right-click problem.

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 2:06 PM

Thanks! I just tested it, and it worked in Firefox.

Previously, I dealt with that "no right click" script by switching to Netscape, which I have set so that Javascript is disabled.

Virtua36 ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 3:17 PM

We have full moon tonight, maybe that explains the huge user numbers over this week(well,we see this next week);-)

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 19 August 2005 at 4:53 PM

I've always shift-clicked threads into new windows, but I doubt if it explains the numbers. I reckon it's just a glitch. I always log on at the same time every evening and up until a year ago or so, there used to always be at least 2 full pages of new posts in this forum every day. It's been dropping steadily. Now it averages 1 page, occasionally 1 1/2. I'm sure some people will disagree, but the quantity of posts here is slowly going down. Either the users are all in other forums, or Rosity is losing traffic. mac

If you've got a 3-button mouse (or a mouse with a clickable scroll wheel - most are) you can also click that in firefox to open a new window ( a bit depending on which plugins you've loaded though, it works at my work but not at home because I have more plugins loaded at home...)

If you click "whos online" in the top menu then scroll to the bottom of the page you will get an accurate account of the # of people really here...that surfers is bots and spiders and people and all sorts of other 'pings' on the web site and not an accurate number of 'surfers' As I type this there are really only 707 members currently logged in. While there are 3788 surfers currently online

Holy guacamole. That's a big difference.

Why so many other pings? Rosity blocks spiders, bots, auto-downloaders, etc., don't they?

Don't know, that is just what I was told when I brought this up a few months ago :)

CodeHouse has an anti-rightclick killer snippet that you can add to your favorites. It works in many cases though sometimes only killing javascript will work. I hate not being able to rightclick zoom on a graphic. I think disabling rightclicks annoys more people than it deters.

BUT! you can actually browse the galleries without being logged in, at least as far as I'm aware. So some people might have links to their galleries from a personal website/portfolio and that could account for at least SOME more visitors. Not 3000 extras though. But are there that many bots and whatnots?! Seems something else is happening as well. Probably the tabbed browser thing and other similar ocurrences.
