Ok, im working on this website about bugs... well mainly insects. Im still working on the information part but there will be a photography section with most of my pics in it. As some of you already know i have a slight problem with colors, which sometimes results in weird combinations when im working on this kinda stuff... ;o) So my question is: how does the colorscheme look to you, and what would you do different ? This is just to alert me to any no-no's considering color and maybe while you guys are at it you could give some comments one the layout and stuff... I need feedback lol It wont be a commercial site, but more like a site where one can find info about a lot of insects and at the same time my online 'portfolio', so chances are "prints" will eventually dissapear from the menu lol Have a marvelous day and thanks for your feedback !! :o) Jeroen P.S. dont hestitate to give me some serious critique (as long as it is constructive ofcourse)

HIYA JEROEN!!!! Wow, that looks good to me. I dont know anything about building webpages, but i do like the set-up in this one. Its clean and elegant. To be honest im not that sure about the colours though. I love the idea of blue and yellow, just like the swedish flag, LOL. But the blue could have looked darker in my opinion. Or why not even black? I see you have a dropshadow on those yellow banners but if you switched to black instead of blue you could try an inner-shadow or something instead. I probably dont know what the hell im talking about, LOL. Bottom line...it looks good to me, just wish i could be of more help than that. Have a great saturday buddy! #:O)

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

Just like the Swedish flag ! - LOL Hi Jeroen, I like the page colour and text, it is easy to read which is vital, and not always the case. I am not to keen on the blue and yellow header/side panel but suppose that is just personal because I can't really tell you why or what would preferable. With sites of this type I think the most important thing is that someone of limited knowledge can navigate around it to find the bug they have just seen considering they may not have a clue as to its type of sub species etc. Not an easy task - wish you well with it :) Richard.

just a little Idea on the banner at tehe top "july" could be nice a little image flip... just one Idea but look fine also how it is good work welldone

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 20 August 2005 at 11:01 AM

the layout looks great jeroen but that yellowish green on my monitor looks a bit too saturated... (like baby-ca-ca) ...i don't have the color #numbers handy... but think you can tone both of those down a bit :]

I believe an educational/technical website should be clean without a bunch of moving buttons, twinkles and distractions like that. The set-up here look fine to me, pretending I just went looking for a coleoptera and found this page. It is more inviting than most insect and bug sites which are either "just for kids" or seem too abundant in text, with a sketch or two and "maybe" a decent photo image. Yes, navigation is vital and should be uncomplicated with links easy to find and follow. IMO For the informative site you offer, I like the clean lines and know the images will be top rate. Colors look fine to me with no suggestion about your choices. Tom.

Jeroen, As the others have stated before me, I am not wild about the combo of colors the yellow-green and the blue. I think if I were stuck on the color pallete of blue and yellow, I might go with some very soft pastels of both the blue and yellow, and because the pastel yellow would be confused somewhat with the beige background (where the text and the image is) I would go with a white there and see how it looks. It looks like you did very well on the compositon/layout of your site, it looks easy enough to navigate. Brenda :)

Very Front Page looking, but effective. Not my colour choices either, but that is the easiest thing to change. You have it nicely layed out.Keep up the good work.

I would also chose for soft colours too....more in pastel tones so as pastel green and pastel soft yellow, but thats me.....the beige backgrond looks good te me, it's easy to read.....good luck with all. I know how many work it is to create a website !!! Ilona

Wow thank you all for your feedback, its much appreciated !! :o) I guess the colors arent very popul;ar eh ? lol I started off with a kinda silver look but missed the color and so went for this. Maybe i should reconsider though ;o) The top banner will be replaced though, im not that happy with it, also the spider on the right isnt really typical for this site anyways. It quite hard to keep the site simple and easy to navigate and at the same time give plenty of info that is easy to find. But i think i did a reasonable job at that :o) Its far from finished though, and although i have and 'alphabet search' page already there will probably be a real search function as well. The photo section will be separated from the info section but still kinda connected, in part through word-links that lead to the 'alphabet search' pages. My aim is to get as many insect on there as i can, if possible all... but thats pretty impossible i guess lol But im getting all the info on there i can find, although i might not have pics of them myself. So it might take some time before its finished. @Zacko: I kinda like the light blue, but i have no problem with it resembeling the swedish colors :D Sweden is imo one of the most beautiful and coolest countries !! :o) @Onslow: Thats why ill have a photo page as well, where people can look for bug that look like theirs :o) @dtp: Thanks, im not quite sure what you mean by image flip, but im gonna change the banner anyways :o) @cynlee: Hmmm maybe i should tone those colors down, there are quite bright... :o) @Tomdart: The image shown here is an example image of 'a coleoptera', the page leads to the suborders, then to the families and from there to the genera and the species each with example images and plenty of info (if i can find any). Im quite pleased you like the layout, i meant it exactly as you described it :o) @Nilla: Hi :o) Thanks for your opinion on the layout, i might indeed change the colors into softer ones... dunno about white though but ill see how it looks :o) @Thanks Doug, yep the color choices lol i might change them :o) Thanks for your opinion on the layout :o) @vlaaitje: You bet, its taking hours and hours just to come up withy the info of a couple of orders... and im gonna need additional info too and then the suborders, families, genera and species sigh might take me a few years lol Thank you all for your opinion and suggestions !! :o) Have a great day, Jeroen

Jeroen,

I have been playing with these in my spare time. Different color schemes, maybe they work for you, maybe they don't. I am leaning towards a black background personally. Let me know when you have seen these so I can un-publish them.

Wow i like those designs Brenda, especially that last one !! :o) As for the colorschemes, i wanted to go with a white background. And honestly, i think ill stick with it :o) Ive made quite some designs over time, and most of em where with dark or black backgrounds. I recently tried out white ones and liked it a lot. Btw. i trashed all my designs halfway through the process lol i was never satisfied with where they were going or i hit a layout-dead-end if you know what i mean. :o) I set my mind to finishing this one no matter what, so i wont be adjusting the layout in any major way cos that would almost mean building the entire site all over again. So im just gonna adjust the colors somewhat and make another banner. But thanks alot for you imput my friend !! :o) @dtp: I agree, flashing banners are a crime lol there wont be any on my site... :o) Greyscale eh ? hmmm i just came back from an almost grey scale design lol ;o) Thanks a lot and have an excellent sunday !! :o) Oh, the pic above was my design before the blue and yellow one. Maybe go back to this colorscheme and use the menu from the blue and yellow one ?

I much prefer the second colour scheme. Simple, easy to read and fresh looking. I didn't care for the yellow next to the blue. I always think the simpler a website is visually the better it works. People are looking to see the content on a site like this. A games site wants lots of flashing doo daahs. The yellow is too murky But that's my humble opinion. Looks like it will be a super website.

Nilla ( ) posted Sun, 21 August 2005 at 11:20 AM

Oh yes this one is much preferred over the first. These colors go together well, and I never said to change your design, just the colors! Brenda :)

Hmmm...blue and white huh? Darn that Finland, LOL. Nah, seriously its looking alot better now. Sweet job!!! Aw, thanks for your kind words on my native land. Youre more than welcome to come visit. #:O)
