Subject: So Let Me Get This Straight...

megalodon ( ) posted Fri, 26 August 2005 at 10:21 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 9:59 AM

...if I purchase items that are encrypted through Cornucopia, I can't export them as 3D objects into say for instance Lightwave? Am I reading this correctly or not?

If what I've said above IS true, why is E-On punishing us? I have no intention of selling (or giving away) items I've purchased. If this is to thwart the crackers and stop theft it obviously won't work since there are a myriad of programs available with better copy protection than E-On encryption. What it DOES do is hurt the honest customer who wants to use the product that THEY purchased.

If' I'm getting this wrong - which I do hope so - I will apologize to E-On. If I'm right, I will probably get MUCH angrier and tell E-On directly.

So... I would appreciate any clarification on this encryption.

Thanks!

Sigh... There is no 'encryption' as such. If you've purchased plants like the orange and walnut trees, you had to wait for an email with an installation code that was keyed to the installation code of your registered copy of Vue before you could use that plant (technically known as key encryption). =All= the new scheme does is embed the registration code into the installer executable that you download from the C3D store; the installer should work only on your copy of Vue, and no one elses (just as happens now). The export issues are a completely separate issue. The first 5.08 beta patch broke the export function -completely- (as well as the saving of modified plant species), and the network rendering. The next two patches only broke things more; that is why they were pulled from the site, leaving the 5.07 as the latest update. The content that originally came from Vue D'Esprit 4 is locked from export due to contractual issues, as well as the fact that Vue 4 vobs lack the metadata that allows export (there was another shift in file format starting with Vue4Pro). When the new patch is released, the export capabilities should be restored to exactly what they were before the 5.08 patch was first released. Some content purchaseable at Cornucopia will be export locked, but that will be solely due to the content creator's choosing to set the lock option. That content should be flagged in some way to avoid people buying something they didn't want, but at the moment things are still being hammered on at the site.

Again, two words about this 'encryption'. 1- what is refered to as 'encryption' (that is, what caused the latest updates meltdown) is just an attempt at simplifying the use of serial numbers by embedding them inside the cornucopia files instead of asking you to keep a list of serial numbers separately as it has been the case with plants so far. 2- about the fact that objects are locked down. That system has been in place since the launch of Vue 4 Pro. As I understand, it is up to the authors of content sold on Cornucopia to decide if they want to lock their files for export or not. E-on is just giving them the option to lock their content if they want to.

Ahhh... now it's making a little more sense.

Still... I would then NOT buy any content that is locked from export - and I would urge others who require objects exported to other programs to do the same. What I said in the first post still applies: Why should we - the paying customers - be punished for the crimes (or potential crimes) of others?

Anyway... thanks to DaleB and agiel for the clarification! :)

I understand about the plants that vue sold were locked and that is why I didn't buy them. Why buy when anyone that so desires can get them unlocked off any peer to peer. If I wanted to be dishonest and have them they are there for free. Yes they are there already unlocked by numerous hackers who have unlocked them to use in any version of vue. Every version of Vue can be downloaded as well that don't need no special serial or code to work. Even updates have been hacked so they work. Yes I have done some investigating to verify what I am saying is true and can give anyone the information to find out yourself. If e-on is so concerned about the prodcut being used illegal then why don't they go after the crooks and not the honest people whoi are willing to support them. Answer me this question. The same will happen with the new content that vendors want to lock from honest people who are willing to pay real money for. Why c3d don't trust its vue users is beyond me and need to lock those models. This is my complaint that we are being treated as criminals. I can assure you those models will find there way on to these peer to peer sites for thos who will get them for free and unlocked. Just part of business as usual on the Internet. I use all legal versions of software on my computers from e-on and Poser and other apps but if I wern't honest I could use all these for free as the locking and encryption will not stop hackers from removing the code. Its only the Honest who are hurt and made to look like criminals from these actions. :o(

E-on doesn't own the locked object, they just get a cut on selling them. Creators of the objects own the copyright and decide to lock export or not. Apparently, locked objects are cheaper or will be, than unlocked ones, this is what I understood from the survey. Iloco's right when saying that anything locked or not is freely and illegally available on the net, and that life's easier for the pirates than for us! But I think it's the same for the ones who download movies, easier than getting down to the video shop!

I'm confused about the whole issue here! I purchased the mountain materials package for Vue 5. I created a mixed material from it then tried saving it but can't. Also, I recently purchased Vue 5 Infinite, but cannot use the original materials in it because of the lock. Since the store is not open, I am forced to wait so I can get 'permission' to use this product in Vue 5I - this seems utterly ridiculous to me. If Poser and/or Daz placed restrictions like this on their purchased products, people would be up in arms. It would mean that if I created something in Poser, I could not export it into Vue or anywhere else for that matter. :)

Trouble ( ) posted Sat, 27 August 2005 at 8:59 AM

Well, I'm in the same boat as Irish. Nothing I got from C3d will work in Infinite because it was purchased for Vue 5, and that is annoying to say the least. However, I'm patient and willing to wait as I'm just a hobbiest and not professional. :) Having said that, I agree with Irish, if DAZ placed that kind of restriction on Poser items (I have 4, 4pp, 5 and 6) I would be thoroughly torked and refuse to purchase any of their content.

You had to have the first 5.08 patch for the auto registration to function. This patch broke both Vues, and until the techs get things fully sorted out, there isn't much anyone can do about it save reinstall. Irish; If you bought something at C3D, then you should still be able to access it by clicking on the 'My Account' link at the top of the front page, then the link that says 'Show Purchases'. You have 5 downloads by default. If you have registered your copy of Infinite, then choose your purchase, click on the 'details'link, and select the registration number for Infinite and download the product again. That simple.

Trouble ( ) posted Sat, 27 August 2005 at 7:39 PM

Well Dale, I followed your instructions to Irish and I have no 'Show Purchases' link. My account shows the free item I got for completing the survey and that's it. It also shows that I have a remaining balance on my voucher. None of the items I purchased are any place to be found in my account, just that free item. Any other suggestions????

Dale B ( ) posted Sat, 27 August 2005 at 9:38 PM

At the moment, no. That access must have been suspended while they make some of the changes planned. Once that is back online, you should be able to do this.

Irish ( ) posted Sat, 27 August 2005 at 11:02 PM

Thanks for your replies Dale and Trouble....now you see why it is sort of frustrating. I hope they will be re-opening the store soon. :)
