Well, i have a helluva lot to learn about shooting with an infared filter that's for sure! kemal and i are both studying this, and experimenting. i know these are bad shots, but only way to get better is for me to study them and analyze what i did wrong and how to improve. no time to list all the data...on my way to work this morning. sure would appreciate your feedback and suggestions gang! this first one was the first infared shot i took that day...an historic theatre they're trying to renovate...The Vogue...

would have been good if it had been in focus, huh. *sigh*. You HAVE to shoot at longer shutter speeds using infared filters 'cause it blocks out almost all visible light. All these shots were made on a VERY bright day. All were hand-held as well which is why they were pretty much crappy. no time to set cam up on tripod on this one. saw the butty on the ground (kemal had his cam on our tripod) and i just went for the shot anyway, just HOPING. didn't turn out, but i still learned something.

this one i took of the dragonfly...again...no tripod. just spotted this guy and decided what the heck...let me see what i could do without a tripod. why is it every time i'm NOT prepared, something like this comes along? LOL!

we were in the middle of the creek. unbelieveable how much it had dried up. this is a fast moving creek normally...fairly deep. unreal we were able to walk in it. i believe i used the tripod...image of kemal making a shot.

last one...another hand-held. just saw these branches on our way out the zoo and thought, what the heck...let me shoot it real quick. wish the focus was better. thanks for looking and any advice is appreciated! :)

Hey, infra is not easy to work with, and these are pretty good for someone still learning it's subtlties. Certain subjects lend themselves well to infra and others, not so well. Sunlit foliage and clear skies can be very dramatic. Is this just a filer, or did you use infrared film too? That creek shot is really dramatic and the branches look clear enough to me. IR shots are sort of expected to be a little fuzzy. :)

They look sharp to me, infra-red usually has a bit of noise in the shot it is part of the appeal. They look great Shiela - no advice I can give you other than keep on shooting, as Kort has said, some subjects work some not so well, it is usually a surprise which ones so it is trial and error. You have made a great start here :)

Thanks guys! :) Kort...just used an infared filter with our digital cam. Richard...yep, a bit more noise with infared, but so far i haven't found that it's a lot more. i'm gonna spend a lot more time studying other people's infared galleries, studying, and, of course, doing a lot of experimenting! It's a lot of fun! Amazing what differences there are when you mess with JUST the white balance settings! :) I've read that a lot of folks take two shots...one with the filter and one without...and then layer them together. I've seen images...pretty stunning! I will try that too! thanks again guys! :)

thanks ladies!!!! Pascale, i love that one too! i did it in PURPLE tones!!!!! hehe!!! i changed it to these tones...figured i was the only nut who'd like the purple! :) what can i say...i have this thing about purple trees!!!! :) besides that, i'm in a purple mood these days!

Pascale is just a stick in the mud...doesn' like purple branches?!?! who ever heard of such a thing? lol (now just cause i'm color blind...doesn't mean a thing to me. lol)

Ok, let me give you some advice here, kick out your tripod.... at least for insect shots, those guys arent gonna wait there until youve set it up you know ;o)
Since it was a very bright day, handheld shots were easily doable... (i shoot everything handhelt btw)
Your shots are in focus, only the dof is somewhat shallow... ok the damsel might have a bit of a handshake there... Let me ask you this, would you be satisfied with the buttie shot if it was its head that was in focus in stead of the back of the wings ? ;o)
Other than that its showing its backside the shot is very beautiful, love the mood you got in there !! The bamboo shots is perfect as it is, the damsel... a little shaky. Both the creek shot and the building shot are superb as well.
All in all a cool set of shots my friend, keep doing magic :o)

Hmmm, i missed that thing about IR blocking most of the light.... ill take back my words then. But seriously, a tripod is not the thing to use with insect shots :o)
