Just finished another Max Mann novella. I don't expect I'll ever find a market for these things. I mostly do them for the fun of it, when my other stuff's not flowing. But I do enjoy writing them. Max got his start back in Crescent's old Bad Writing Challenge. I ended up liking the character so much he just keeps coming back. And it certainly does feel good to finish something, even if it's just for fun. jon

Congratulations, Jon!! Don't give up on old Max. I have confidence in him. :) And you. :D At least you're writing. That's a good thing.

Congratulations! I agree with dialyn, that's definitely a good thing. And it's always good to finish something up :) I think that alone can be worth the time to write something sometimes :) David L. Writer's Coord.

I love Max Mann. At least the ones I have read. Are you going to post this one?

jstro ( ) posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 4:35 PM

I'm not sure. The first chapters of the first two novellas could sort of stand on their own. This one does not lend itself to that as well as the others. Chapter One may not hold up well all on its own. jon

So that was only the first chapter I read...I thought they were short stories. They did stand well on their own. As I recall you had a website with more stuff available but the address I no longer have.

Aside from the first one written for a challenge here, I think all the Max Mann stories have been novellas, which is a hard format to sell, unfortunately. I'm thinking, though, now that you have several, perhaps you could send them out packaged together (as a trilogy in one volume, sort of).

Actually he apparently had the first chapters up on his site. I remember reading more than the one here in his gallery. I assumed they both were short stories at the time but now I realize they are the beginnings of his novellas. They were very entertaining. I remember the site had a lot of samples of writing not just Max.

I'm not disagreeing with you. If you do a search on "jstro" in the archives, you can find the link easily enough. Or I am sure jon will come back and post it again for us. He's very good about these things.

Both Max Mann, Private Eye and Twenty-Seventh Street are in my Gallery here. Both were actually done for Renerosity monthly challenges but then took on lives of their own. That may be why they read like short stories. Private Eye morphed into Max Mann and the Black Widow while Twenty-Seventh Street morphed into Max Mann and the Alley of Death. Both are novellas. Now, with Max Man and the Mangled Mutt, I have three novellas. Packaging them as a triplet seems like a good idea. Maybe I need to go to a mystery writer's convention to get a feel for who may be interested. I think I'll try to write another one when the Write a Book In a Month contest rolls around again. I have ideas for at least two more right now. If I get enough of these puppies, maybe someone would be interested in making them into a (campy) mystery TV series. ;-) Japes is right, I did have a bunch of stuff up on my own website. Unfortunately the site got corrupted (more than once) and in its latest incarnation most of my writings have yet to be restored. I'll try and upload it all again soon. I posted the link in case anyone is interested. Just click on the Short Stories, Poems or Essays buttons if you would like to read any of it. Thanks for the encouragement and kind words. jon

The mutt isn't really mangled, is it? :( Woof.

Yes, unfortunatley, it is. But it recovers nicely. jon
