Easy, Rent a backhoe and a bulldozer, dig a trench, then fill it with water (LOL). There are a number of ways to create a river in Vue. The one I use most often is to create a terrain, and then cut a path in the terrain using the terrain editor or using a bitmap generated terrain with a river cutting through it. Then, just add a water plane on top slightly below the surface of the terrain.

Yeah, what he said :o) You will have the most control if you draw a grayscale height map in Photoshop (or another paint app) and import it into the Terrain Editor. Use the Material Editor's Altitude and Slope settings and the amount of blend slider to change the material below the top of your stream's bank. I also had some success in getting a greener/wetter look alongside the water, using those Material Editor controls carefully.

Dunno which version of Vue you're using, but there is a good explanation in the Vue 5i Terrain modeling section. Basically, you make a grayscale square, "power of 2 size" (512 X 512 or 1024 X 1024) picture, looking straight down on your terrain. Paint the whole thing with RGB 128/128/128 (mid gray). Now, wherever you want something to stick up, you make it lighter. Where you want to dig down, you make it darker. So you just paint a terrain. In the Vue Terrain Editor, you import your picture. Then you can use just that or mix it in with a Vue generated terrain. After that, you can expand or compress your terrain to get the scale you want, either in Vue after you leave the Terrain Editor, or using tools in the Terrain Editor. Do 2 or 3 quick sketchs first, to see who it works and get used to everything - before you spend a long time on a finished terrain. You can also import height maps make by other terrain building apps, like Terragen or Bryce. Look in the "Backroom" of this forum and search Google, there is prolly a step-by-step tutorial.

Here's a terrain bitmap that I used for the image above. Just load it into your terrain editor and then you'll see how it works.

This river is so perfect. Can you please tell us how did you put the flowers and the textures?

dburdick ( ) posted Wed, 31 August 2005 at 1:28 AM

To Sara11: The flowers were created as an ecosystem material in Vue5I. The trees are just standard Vue Trees. The rocks are also an ecosystem material. Not a very difficult scene to create actually. Just play with some of the ecosystem tutorial scenes to get the hang of it

There's a good tutorial on using height map images with Vue (pdf plus many examples to download) at http://www.microbion.co.uk/graphics/vue5.htm
