Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 22 9:27 pm)
I don't know how different the Mac version is from PC (I'm on PC), but with obp files, you have to open the Objects library, then click on import and browse for it. I always put those things into the User section of the library. It's not done with the regular Import Object selection in the File menu. See if that works for you. Melanie
OBP's are a native Bryce file format and only work in Bryce. However, about 80 per cent of OBP's can be exported from Bryce (using the Bryce Export Easter Egg) as long as they are not Booleans. You will instantly know during the first phase of the export if it will export or not. Bryce guru's Wolfiesden.com and Fastraxx have both created tutorials on this. Check your local listings...
Ravenfeeder, I believe Melanie is talking about Bryce, not Poser. There is nothing out there in the vast space of import/export readers/writers except Bryce that reads/writes .obp. Nothing, nohow, nowhere. At least nothing accessable to the public. Thanks for the tips. This is common knowledge to most of us, but to those who don't know this, thanks for posting. It always helps to have these little tips and tricks re-posted so that everyone gets to know them and benefit from them. The "MacConverter" in the free section here does the work for you in creating a Mac friendly pp3, pz2, cr2, fc2, hr2, hd2, etc file (it will combine any and all .rsr files to their corresponding mate and makes them Mac-Poser ready) No need to dabble in ResEdit. Most people don't want to get that deep into the root of their computer anyway. MacConverter does all this for you. So yes, Mac users have always been able to use 90% of all the Free Stuff here. Back to Bryce. Bryce 4 imports/exports most of all the same file formats as Poser 4, so in turn they are very compatible with each other. TIP: Bryce does NOT export any of it's primitives to other formats other than .obp. Spheres, boxes, cones, etc (all the shapes in the Create menu with the EXCEPTION of the "terrains - both flat and lattice). It's .obp or nothing with them. James
Oops, you're right. When you said obp, I automatically thought of Bryce because it's a Bryce file. Sorry. I got confused. I don't believe you can bring obp's into Poser unless you export if from Bryce as an obj or 3DS, or some file format Poser will recognize. Again, sorry for the confusion. Melanie
BTW, the difference between PC obj files and 'Mac-compatible' obj files is that the versions passed through MacConverter now have a specific type and creator. The data is identical, but Poser's open dialog box isn't smart enough to recognize files by extension as well as the Mac type/creator scheme (like most graphics programs for Mac can). I'll keep reposting this point from time to time until Curious Labs gets on the stick. If they already have with Pro Pack, they have my apologies in advance.

Although I've been around computers since the days when we wrote our own software and fed it in on a paper tape, I'm still new to 3D graphics. However, I have discovered a few things along the way that might be useful to other newbies and I pass them on, for whatever they're worth. 1. Free stuff items for Poser labelled 'PC' but not Mac can be used on the Mac with the proper conversions. The 'pp2' files can be converted with ResEdit (and probably other ways too) to Mac format. 2. Bryce free stuff files - objects - can be directly imported into Poser if they're 3DS format, but not if they're 'obp'. Least I haven't found a way to do the 'obp's yet. So there it is. Couple of tips, for whatever good they do. A bit of 'give-back' for all the good information I've gotten in this forum.
