I think it's a bit of a slap in the face considering they got us to beta test it by giving a low price and that ice queen character. Now you can buy it from any version and get Miki? And you think this is special? Sure, for folks who waited to get a more stable version and a more valuable freebie. Marque

No one forced anyone to buy it back when it first came out :-) MAYA complete used to cost $10,000 and people/studios paid it now its around $1600 USD or some such. its the nature of these things. Frankly those who are sooo worried about software price drops after they willingly buy something should just never buy any programs and just wait a few years until it becomes free on the coverdisc of "3D world" magazine :-/

They pretty much said it was a one time offer. Maybe they need to word it differently. I still think it's bad business, but only for the end user who already bought it. It's a great deal for those who wait. Not forced to buy it true, but if you wanted the character that they were touting you had to buy it then. I'm glad to see you're so unconcerned about it. I don't think wolf was saying he was unconcerned. It's just the nature of things. I mean, you could argue the same issue about the auto industry. Before the summer began, people who bought American cars did so at full price. Then came the rising gas price, and people stopped buying cars. Next thing you know, the manufacturers all started giving out employee level discounts for new car buyers. It is supply and demand. They want to continue to sell copies of the software, besides the fact that if you buy/upgrade poser 6, you will probably be more apt to buy from Content Paradise, and that is another revenue stream for EF.

Jimdoria ( ) posted Wed, 07 September 2005 at 1:32 PM

Yes, supply and demand are part of it, but the 3-D software industry seems worst than most when it comes to this. Back when I was an avid TrueSpace user, this complaint was leveled against Caligari all the time. They'd release a new version, offer an upgrade discount, but then a few months later they'd offer an "amnesty" upgrade or some other special at less than the price of the "real" upgrade!

People would get mad, but who knows how many sales they lost over it? Probably few. 3D tends to be like religion - you stick with what you started with. Anyone here giving up Poser because of this? Let's see a show of hands. :-)

They know they have a certain type of user who will pay a premium to get the latest version as soon as it's available. They may dangle a carrot or two to get them off their butts and reaching for their credit cards (Winter Queen, "early upgrade" pricing...) But once all those people have purchased, there are still a lot of potential customers out there, and dropping price is one way to get them.

Either you buy early with the knowledge that the price will drop, or you wait until the price drops and spend a few months enviously reading the posts about all the kewl new features the early adopters are using. Or wait for that issue of 3D Graphics :-)

Don't forget you can just wait for Poser 10 and then grab P6 for 5 bucks on ebay... ;-) It's not like you couldn't use P6 for some months now. You also got Winter Queen + Shade LE and Miki isn't mentioned as part of the upgrade page. That was a different promotion.

aeilkema ( ) posted Wed, 07 September 2005 at 4:29 PM

But there's something else going on here. When Poser 6 came out the people who pre-ordered were told that they would get special pricing and special add-on and Shade 7 LE, and that it would be the best Poser 6 deal ever to be released. I'm really not sure if the pre-order deal was better then this one. I would trade any minute. I never use Shade at all, paid more and rather have a new figure then the Winter Queen. I know prices drop, but we were led to believe by CL that the price would never be as low as in the pre-order deal. Guess the lesson is, don't trust any of these companies, they just can't keep a promise.

I'll have to agree with you on that one aeilkema. Though I do like the Winter Queen, I would have much preferred a fully new figure, say, a female who actually looked human... I don't use Shade either. I finally installed it the other day, and I just sat there staring at it thinking, "What the *^%& is this?!?!" Technically they never lied though. The deal was low for a combo of Poser 6 and Shade LE. The two products together will never come packaged at that price again, so it's really just a nice bit of spinning the truth. Yes, we got a bit taken...

wolf359 ( ) posted Wed, 07 September 2005 at 5:11 PM

Pardon me but may I see a link please?? you know where we are explicitly "promised" that the price will "never" be as low as the pre-order deal?? No big corporate conspiracy here ever heard of sales hype??. most responsible adults know it when they see it and make buying choices based on some aknowledgment of reality IM not seeing the point of this latter day whining. about what some people are getting to pay for a product you CHOSE to buy months ago. buying a piece of 3D software is not investing in an appreciating asset the same with computer hardware if DELL offers you a $200 pentuim4 PC at the "lowest prices ever!!" does any Adult here seriously expect or Demand that DELL NEVER Sell that PC to anyone for less than $200 for as long as the universe exists?? Most people here bought poser6 for the new render options etc. that other crap thrown in to sweeten the deal was just ornamental poo-ware.

You think that's bad. I paid $500 for a cell-phone, and it sold for $250 three months later.

um do u think they are selling poser 6 off because poser 7 is just around the corner maybe? that would be my guess, love esther

Sheesh, I still can't even purchase Poser 6 since last Friday. Still get an apache error from Content Paradise shopping cart and 2 unanswered e-mails to support. I just sent a 3rd one half an hour ago. Pffft, at this rate, I'll wait for it to come out on a 3D-Graphics Mag CD.

Miki Deal is over and has bee since before this promotion started. (This started on the first, Miki ended in August.) The deal for early upgrade was Shade and the Winter Queen. If you did not want Shade you should have waited. The next offer was bit cheaper. They will never offer that combination again, and when you look at the combination it is a great deal. Look at it this way. You got to check out Shade for nothing.

Should have a waited and miss out all of the fun and productivity? I'm happy I purchased P6 right from the start, it helped my projects along quite a lot. We all know better deals eventually will come, but at times companies do try to make you beleive there won't be. The reason I believed it was because of Calagari. I purchased one of their applications in the pre-sale (gameSpace) and they let users know a better deal would not happen. Even up to now (almost 3yrs later) there hasn't been a better deal at all. They've kept their word. I've noticed that a lot of Poser related companies or those who deal on a regular scale with Poser users (CL, now EF, DAZ and E-On) do make a lot of promises, but very often will not keep there word. I'm coming from the side of the 3D world where companies do keep their promises, but on this side of the 3D world I've noticed that a promise doesn't mean a lot. That is a shame. That's what bugs me. I've dealt with quite a number of 3D related applications before I turned to 3D comics and my experience was very pleasant. Customers were treated fair and helpful. Now I've entered a new world only to find out that a customer isn't treated fair, with respect or helpful at all. Some of these companies even seem to view customers as an annoyance at times. Guess I do have to get used to it, but it is a shame.

Loyal customers who feel left behind might consider selling thier earlier versions of poser on Ebay. Poser 3 is going for close to $60. I think even copies of poser 1 would go for close to that. People are buying in order to then upgrade.

aeilkema ( ) posted Sat, 10 September 2005 at 2:47 PM

"People are buying in order to then upgrade." Do you mean the people who buy the earlier copy at ebay, buy those because they want to upgrade after they've bought it? If that is the case, then there's no point in selling, since you can only upgrade once with a serial#. If I've bought P3 (which I did) and upgraded to P, then P5 then P5 (which I did too), I can sell you P3, P4 or P5, but you cannot upgrade!

I'm not sure what the rules are. Are you sure I would nto be able to upgrade using those? I woudl guess I couldn't use a program you already purchaed p6 with. But I woudl think I could use any version you didn't directly buy the p6 upgrade with. Does anyone know the rules?
