Subject: What is the ideal PC set up to use with Poser 6

Hi Can anyone tell me what the best PC to use with Poser 6 is ie Ram hard drive, and monitor size please give me the specs. My current PC message says this when I try to save a file. Your out of memory increase amount of memory to poser Thanks Rowlando

Look at the system requirements.... Then multiply all values by 4 :)

Yep. 2 GB of Ram are imo a must have and even then it is sometimes not very amusing when you render in Firefly.

AMD Athlon 2400+ (2Ghz), 1Gb RAM, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256Mb, 120Gb HD, WinXP Home SR1. The imo perfect setup for Poser 6. Now before any start to laugh take a look at the pics and tell me if yours can do it too. All Poser 6 rendered without any postwork, except for grayscaling the pics. The original sizes of the pics are 1180x885. The reason they're grayscale is because they're being used for for bw comics, so I hardly ever keep the original color pic. The figures used in the picture are mainly M3/V3 or M1/V1 and the WW2 scene are all M2's. The knights are either PhilC's knights for P4, P5 Don on Charger (with splinebender armor) and one of them is M1. Various clothes and textures used. All textured scaled down (between 512x512 and 1500x1500, depending on the item).

I'd suggest that you first update Poser, as the out of memory error when saving is a pre SR 1 bug.

RAM: as much as you can afford. At least 1 GB, 2 GB is better, more is useful when you run other apps next to Poser (your OS for instance) CPU: AMD, the fastest you can afford Disk: Big and fast. Preferably multiple disks. Graphics card: one with decent OpenGL support. ATI and nVidia tend to be OK. But if you want to use other 3D apps that really tap into the power of OpenGL, go for nVidia Quadro or ATI FireGL, or another high end graphics workstation card.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Hi,

Definitely worth looking at dual core. Although P6 is only single threaded, the OS and other tasks could be busy on another core leaving practically a whole CPU core to your rendering. The sweet spot for (dual core) performance per price is probably the AMD 4400+ X2.

Hope you don't mind but I just wanted to chip in and ask svdl a couple of questions.

Is the kit that you mention above what you use for your Vue 5 Infinite renders?

I am contemplating getting Vue 5 Esprit as a renderer for my P5 / P6 scenes. Do you actually use all the features of Vue 5 Infinite in your renders or would the lesser Esprit version be capable of the same stuff? What sort of render times are you looking at for your renders? Do you make one scene with all your figures and import to vue or can you make multiple scenes and import separately.

I use Vue Infinite mostly on my main workstation, sometimes on the AthlonXP2700. It doesn't run stable on the P4, OpenGL issues with the ATI card.

I often use Ecosystems, which are only available in Infinite. When a scene of mine contains midrange or background crowds, you can bet I've used one or more ecosystems.

And I always make multiple Poser scenes, import them into Vue, fix up the materials and save them as VOB. The final scene is constructed from these VOBs.

Vue Infinite imports Poser animations, including dynamic cloth and hair. Vue d'Esprit needs Mover 5 for animation imports. A word of warning: Vue doesn't import P6 SR1 cloth animations, but it will import P6 (no SR) and P5 cloth animations. That's why I keep P5 around. Render times vary from 2 hours to over 60 hours, depending on lighting settings and size of the render (usually 3200x2400px). I almost always use global illumination. On average my renders take about 6 hours.

RAM, RAM, and more RAM. I recommend 3GB, though I have 4GB in my current system. Poser will only use 2GB, but it's nice to have room for the OS and a few other programs. Dual core is nice, but at least get a hyper-threaded processor. Again, Poser is single-threaded, but it's nice to have a few cycles for the OS and other programs, leaving an entire logical processor for Poser. Other than that, get a video card with a decent OpenGL driver -- this is not something the games tend to emphasize. Get a decent sized HD, at least 200GB. All the add-on models, plus various projects (and versions of projects) adds up the space pretty quick. Get a DVD burner for backups of those projects. If you're going to do much postwork or texture work, I highly recommend a tablet. Decent ones can be found for ~$200. It's not for Poser, really, but for whatever your bitmap editor is. And then just hit the sweet spot on the processor speed. The absolute fastest will be 30% more expensive and only 8% faster. Drop down a tier or two, get your money's worth, and avoid any bleeding edge processor. And if I wasn't clear enough before, RAM, RAM, and more RAM.

All my memmory problems were cured by updating with SR1 I only have 384MB RAM and 800MHz processor not up to those mentioned above. I'll upgrade if I feel the need - but I don't see it just yet.
