Any chance of a high res copy of shot 7? That would make a killer poster.... ;)

ellocolobo ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 10:18 PM

Jay...Sorry, I don't have orgs but I will ask my son tommorrow...

skiwillgee ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 10:21 PM

Did you take these? If so where, I don't want to live in Kansas! I experienced the wrath of hurricane Hugo about 15 years ago and still get anxious when the wind starts to blow.

ellocolobo ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 10:26 PM

No...I got these from my son who got them from his friend who swears these are Katrina...I don't really know but Im going to try and find out more tommorrow...I went through a couple of these in NC...Thats why I now live in NM...hahaha

skiwillgee ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 10:38 PM

I'm still in NC. If you seen hurricane weather you probably suspect of this also. These look super cell spawned.

ellocolobo ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 10:40 PM

skiwillgee> Where are you? I lived in Cary for over 20 years..Good luck to you and stay safe..

Jaymonjay ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:11 PM

Not Katrina (these are supercells, not hurricanes), but still pretty awesome. :)

Rochr ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:41 PM

AWESOME pics... I have seen these kinds of super cells at different times throughout my life. Clouds like these are magnificent yet can be very deadly.

There are 10 kinds of people: Those who know binary, and those who don't.

A whiner is about as useful as a one-legged man at an arse kicking contest.

I'm in Chalybeate Springs (well, it's the closest town)..Ophelia is going to graze the other side of Harnett county, so the main thing to worry about is tornados, which I suspect the above are..;) Drove through Cary on the way to work (still do) every workday..;) (for those outside NC, Cary is the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees..;)

Awesome pics, would like to see more if at all possible. I find storms, tornados and such meteorological phenomenon fascinating, that is, unless Im caught up in one. LOL@Pakled: Containment Area for Relocated Yankees Still cant get over losing the war huh? ;)

ellocolobo ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 2:52 PM

I did a google on Supercells and found all sorts of these type pics...Most seem to be in Texas, Ark, OK, and Kansas..Check them out...

Claymor ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 4:55 PM

INteresting...I saw some of these in my buddies email this morning and they were supposedly taken by a relative of his....hmmmmm....

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 4:55 PM

nah..I didn't make it up..quick Geography lesson. There's a place, almost surrounded by Cary, called Research Triangle Park..home to IBM, Cree, Kronos, GSK, Nortel, yada yada.. They brought most of the employees in from NY, NJ (no, I don't know which exits..;) There's about 100,000 people working there (including me).
Now the housing prices in the Northeast are so much higher than down here (well, they used to be) that people could buy twice the house for less money. So word got around, and they came here in droves. Cary grew so fast in the 80's (pop 1970, about 15,000, pop 2000, about 110,000), that cops had to ask directions on crimes, because the neighborhoods weren't there a month earlier, etc.
No, we just give 'em heck, because of the ordinances, covenants, etc., that they set up. Everythings' illegal in Cary; Taco Bell, the Shiny Diner, etc., all chains, etc., have to meet strict rules, or change the colors of their buildings, etc..it's all good clean fun.
Funny thing is, they complain when they get here, but after awhile, they dont' want to leave..;)

Pakled> I must confess I worked for the City of Cary for over 20 years...I remember when the town hall was in a building so small that the eng, Inspection, Planning depts were all in one room the size of my bed room...I saw it all grow from the inside..

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 7:07 PM

And here I thought you were kidding at first. Thanks for the info! That sort of thing happens all the time all around the country. I remember being in Oregon a few years back and how pissed the natives there were with northern Californians for buying up all sorts of prime coastal property in southern Oregon and forcing prices up for everyone else. Ive had the pleasure of meeting many southern rebels over the years here in NYC in what is known in my union as a work share program. Good hearty stock of people with a great sense of humor. Say, looks like you guys are in for some meteorological phenomenon yourselves. Seems hurricane Ophelia is heading your way...stay safe!

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 7:31 PM

yup..so far it's just some needed rain, and a touch of wind this far in..;) The missus is from Oregon, and I've heard the Californian lament before..;)

@ Quest We didn't lose the war, we just let the yanks think they did so they would leave. @ ellocolobo I'm in small town of Mount Holly, NC. My extended family owned a beach front south of Myrtle Beach (Garden City). Lost it in '54 to Hurricane Hazel, rebuilt and sold it year before Hugo; 1990 I think. I'm about 200 miles inland so the storms are usually lots of rain and gusty wind by the time they get this far from the ocean. Hugo picked up some freaky jet streams and zoomed ashore at 35mph. Long story shorten, the eye passed within less than 5 miles of my home with sustained winds of 90 and gust over 100. The forest, structures, people this far inland were not acclimated to that and alot went down. One scarey night. Next time the weather lines up like that again I won't stop until the Appalacian mtn's are behind me.

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 11:02 PM

LOLSkiwillgee, I knew there were a few things about Robert E. Lee I liked, he was way too smart a man. Although hurricanes have a tendency to peter out after hitting dry land because their weather engine of rising warm water moisture is depleted, they are not to be underestimated, especially in those areas where the citizenry are not expecting an un-natural turn of events. Way too much has been happening the last few years which indicate abnormal weather patterns. Whether these patterns are natural cyclic events or have been exacerbated by the intrusion of man is moot and in the immediate sense, unimportant. Just be careful and dont get too crazy with hurricane parties.

Great pics. I remeber a few storms that looked similar in my days when I was in Oklahoma in the early 90's.

ellocolobo ( ) posted Fri, 16 September 2005 at 2:28 PM

Huh, Was just over at 3DC and somebody had posted the exact same pictures...Said they were told they were pics of Katrina...Wonder how this thing is getting around...Still cool pics.

Quest ( ) posted Fri, 16 September 2005 at 6:23 PM

Well, they're getting around because they're cool and awesome pics, no doubt about it. Someone obviously was trying to impress your son. No need to get bent over this, it happens all the time especially over the Internet. It becomes obvious also that it's a super cell and maybe even several different super cells. I'm from NYC and never experienced a tornado in my life. After watching so many scientific specials on cable, even I know they're super cells just by looking at them (super cells as they relate to tornados). Most fascinating!

ellocolobo ( ) posted Fri, 16 September 2005 at 9:38 PM

Oh no problem Quest...I have been through two tornadoes in NC and Ohio and they are noooooooo fun...
