Googled my name tonight and I find an image of mine posted on a website without my permission. OK it is cool that the person who took my image gave me credit, but why not ask me first? I realize that this is one of the many drawbacks to posting my work on the web, but it still makes my blood boil! Anyone in here read "boxes" or japanese? Maybe you can help me find the contact link? This image of mine is only posted on two sites, this one and another photo site. I will be doing a post in that forum as soon as I am finished here. Any of you all that have "cat shots" in your gallery may want to have a look around too! Oh yeah and here is the link! Brenda Guiles

Least they gave you the copyright.I have seen my images on sites and hotlinked to my website, so I go in and edit the image and plaster my name all over it. Or you can be real nasty if they are using your linked image and change it to some really disgusting sight.heheee. Just look up this site in a whois data base to find the email or contact info which I did and it is so in messed up language it's hard to find a email, You could always run your mouse over the stie to see if you can see a mailto in your status bar.

Yeah Doug I was just doing that! I can find a link for help but then there is just more "box language". What is this box language Doug? No contact or email links that I can find! sigh

TobinLam ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:16 PM

The boxes are characters that aren't supported by your current font set. Asian languages usually aren't installed on machines outside asia because the font set is absolutely huge.

DJB ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:18 PM

When characters are not recognized by html they make boxes. So that whois is all a bunch of jumble. Usually though you can find an email at the same name@same domain. this home site is http://www.hatena.ne.jp/ so you may find an email--- hatena@www.hatena.ne.jp That is if they ever read them. I block mine because of so much spam to those.

be interested to know if they take it down... how irritating! :P (always good to google oneself every now & then... see where all you've been & how many others have the same name)

Can't find anything anymore by following the link. Of course I sent him an email telling him that if he didn't remove the image I was going to tell all of the other photographers whos work he had taken if he didn't remove it. I did make a post in UF as well. Looks like the whole page is missing now. Brenda :)

Nilla ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 12:23 PM

Grrrr Sadly this is a problem that wont go away anytime soon. I have images on about 10 sites that have asked my permission and link back to me as part of the deal. Also numerous images of models on their own sites/online folios that I have given them permission to use, Most notably Yvonne and Britney, to be fair they generate a fair bit of work for me, so thats cool. My site gets around 10-15000 page views a month, so there are probably hundreds stolen for every one that is asked for. I have started to put my name on images, particularly the model ones as these are most likely to get stolen, I dont like having to do this, but feel it has become necessary in some cases, sad really. I have never come across any that have been stolen, Googiling my name brings up too many results to check them all (fame at last lol) My friend found one of his images on the front cover of a mag! He sent them an invoice saying pay or go to court lol (bold move) they paid up, lucky guy!

The Truth is Out There

That is the deal if they don't ask your permission to use your image, and they use it on a magazine cover, they know they will lose in court and it could create bad publicity for them, so yep they are going to pay for the use of it. Once I get my website up and rolling, I will allow not for profit use with a link back to my site, as I think that is smart business. But when they just take your image and post it on their website with no permission, in a way it is like a compliment, but they aren't paying for the right to use it. I wanted the image removed, and it appears that the whole page has been removed. Probably because the rest of the images were stolen from UF too! I not only google my name, I use a few different search engines. I also use the image search feature as well, and I come up quite a few times. It is not the first time I have requested an image of mine removed from a site, and I am sure it won't be the last. I refuse to let my images stay there because permission wasn't asked first. I am usually pretty leinient if asked first. One thing I hate more then anything is a theif. Brenda :)
